OT: Pentium M or Intel Core Duo for laptop

xjerx wrote on 9/2/2006, 7:21 AM
I really just need a new laptop to use for internet purposes...but I figured while I'm getting one it might as well be able to handle a little bit of video work.

So i was wondering...which would be better for these purposes Pentium M or the Intel Core Duo?

thanks
jeremiah

ps... i'm looking at these two dells (cuz they're the cheapest) one has the core duo with 2 GB of RAM and 80GB Drive...or the one with Pentium M with 1GB of RAM and 60 GB Drive..both within $100 difference of each other

xjerx,

" core duo with 2 GB of RAM and 80GB Drive...or ...Pentium M with 1GB of RAM and 60 GB Drive..both within $100 ... of each other ".

A bump up to Core Duo, + 1 Gb more RAM, + 20 GB more useable storage for ~$100 more sounds like a very worthwile add-on.
[Not necessary for "internet purposes", but certainly valuable for "video work"]

Intel is reputedly moving out the Core Duo quickly in favor of their recently announced Core 2 Duo. That may result in some good deals on Core Duo machines for you.

Verify that Firewire is included if you expect to transfer video from a DV camera to your laptop.

I suggest you search this forum to review the experiences other Vegas users report with their Dells.

i haven't seen as big a price drop in the duo's as the p4 line, but that's kinda expected.

My dad has a dell laptop. He's has some problems with it & right now it's out on service. Which SUCKS because he needed it tuesday for a presentation. So now he's SOL. :( Good support but he's needed support on it several times already.

My 2 cents:

go with the Core duo or even better, Core 2 duo.

I think I read that the Core Duo and the Core 2 share a lot of the architecture of the Pentium M, so they are more "advanced" than the M is. The M is a great processor, lower power consumption, more true processing power per Ghz than the P4.

My Acer Travelmate 8204 with T2500 Core Duo Centrino CPU is twice as fast as my old desktop Athlon XP 2800+ Barton. I wouldn't consider a single CPU for anything except the cheapest machine primarily for Internet access.
