Depends on what your shooting...if it's a movie production, yes you need a permit as they can close off streets and sidewalks.
If it's just you and your RED, it's not a problem. As long as you don't make noise and hamper traffic you'll be fine.
A few of use here have the RED and film in downtown Montreal with no problems.
The only two areas that didn't like us to film was the IBM building (private) and Pratt park, but mostly because we were a wedding party.
If you go to the old port on a Saturday afternoon, you'll see tons of videographers.
I live in montreal.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike and Julius!

Wouldn't it be better to just ask the officials of Montreal, rather than relying on second-hand information? Better to be safe than sorry, isn't it?

Ask who? Just because you ask someone does not mean that that someone actually knows enough to give you the proper answer .. yet they may answer you anyway.

You're a lot more likely to get the correct answer from the city's permits department than you are from posting a question on a forum, in my opinion.

I gave Ralph (the OP) the permit office information and Julius gave him first hand information about shooting in the city.

Unfortunately, in many cases, you will find that what the permit office (or other official entity) says, may not match what the local law enforcement types think. Look at the issue of GPS on commercial airplanes - try getting the same answer twice in a row when you ask if you can use your GPS in flight. Asking the permit office AND having Julius comment is probably the best solution.

Well if the cops show up, you can either give them the name of the person in the permit office who you spoke to, or you can give them the name of some person on a web forum who told you it would be okay. Your choice.

I doubt the cops are going to show up, but I'll acknowledge that it's a reasonable concern. All inputs appreciated.

Why don't you just call the Montreal Film Commission?

http://www.montrealfilm.com/

Their job is to promote video and film production in Montreal. If there is red-tape to cut, they know who to call.
