OT: Photoshop CS4 Help

Surely I have ticked or unticked something that causes the image to be updated but I can't find it for the life of me. Any Ideas?

Basically I can't get the fx I apply to show on the image, but I can when I unselect "preview" but as soon as I hit "okay" the changes disappear.

Any help would be appreciated- thanks!

Okay, I have noticed something but I don't know how to change it. The eye icons are slightly greyed on the layers where the fx are applied. I made a new document and applied some fx and they showed up and the eye icons are fully saturated.

Now, if I can only find out how to change this...

That would have been the topmost eye icon in each stack, right?

Nope. I tried toggling that one but without change and you can see in the screenshot that it is toggled on. For some reason you have to right click and enable. I don't know why but there are a lot of things I don't understand when it comes to photoshop.
