OT: Poser 5 free, back on line

vitalforce wrote on 9/9/2006, 6:31 PM
I tried once again to download the free Poser 5 on the web site contentparadise.com, and for once, about 4 p.m. on a Saturday (today), the download got through and commenced to run through my broadband at about 110 kb/sec. After a 45-minute download of the "setup.exe" (the main program), the additional download of the content CD in a zip file, about 338mb, came through at 150kb/sec in another 45 minutes.

For those interested, either everyone went out on a September Saturday afternoon and left me with the server, or they have added more capacity and can now give the download speed people would want.

Well I just checked and the 'free' download is finished, now you can get it for $20.00, guess they've got to pay for all that bandwidth somehow.
Not that I'm complaining, $20 is a pretty trivial amount compared to the time I've spent getting my head around the other freebies, Bryce and Daz Studio. To say nothing of the cost of printing out the 500 page manual.

Interesting. The download links they sent me in my emailed receipt no longer work. But if i log into the site again and check My Stuff there are links there that are working now. Just started my downloads ... should be done in a little less than an hour. Hopefully.

edit ... an hour later

Download complete! Got both files simultaneously in about 55 minutes.

Wish they had a direct link to the files instead of those scripts. It would be nice to be able to resume downloading when it breaks 10 MB before the end.

Got the downloads Saturday morning with no problems. Throughput averaged about 5 Mbps.

Yes, I only got through by working the My Stuff links, not the confirming email.

I have tried many times to download Setup.exe

Setup.exe is an html document and an unreadable one at that.

John, don't try to save that link. Click on it. It opens up a new window that then passes off the real setup.exe link to your browser.

Running pretty nicely tonight. Just got both files the past 30 minutes. ~600KB/sec overall.

Thanks Kelly,

I was using Firefox to download the file and it wouldn't download under any circumstances. Internet Explorer worked.

Downloading right now with Firefox here okay... Though it was almost a week between when I put Poser in my cart and when the site would give me a slot. (Not complaining -- it's free software, after all. Pay customers were probably ahead in the queue.)

I'll say one thing, once you connect, it's a pretty quick download.

Edit: Okay, what the fudge? I downloaded the Setup.exe just fine in Firefox, but there's also a Content CD Zip file in my cart that I can't download no matter what I use (Firefox nor IE). Little help, anyone?

Never heard of it. What do you use it for? Does it do something in Vegas?
bStro wrote on 9/11/2006, 2:15 PM
Poser? It's a 3D modeler / renderer / whatever for making fake people. ;) It was one of the top dogs in that area the first time I heard of it, but I've not paid attention and don't know how where it stands these days. But someone's giving away copies of the old version as the new version is coming out soon, so who am I to pass it up?

(Actually, they were giving it away. It looks like now it's $20.)

Both worked fine for me using firefox last night. I'd just keep trying. They were obviously caught off guard by the demand, or the "expert" put the decimal point in the wrong place. Each person is trying to download 600MB of stuff.
