OT--possibly Meteors

Widetrack wrote on 8/20/2008, 7:46 PM
I know it's a stretch to ask this here, but I've found Vegas often can do some things faster and better than you'd expect, and anyway the people on this forum are pretty well-informed.

Anyway.....

I need to make a comet / meteor flyby: glowing head, fiery tail trailing off to misty, glittering dust...that kind of thing.

I dabble in Strata 3D and have spent WAY too much time there trying to make this to no avail.

Anybody got any good ideas how I could make a comet?

Bezier masks and gen media. Use noise FX etc.

There's a video tutorial on Youtube showing how to make a fireball thingy with a tail in After Effect. Watch it, you can do exactly the same thing in Vegas you just miss out on the real time previewing.

OK, found it as it's pretty popular:

Obviously you need to change the colors and the tail etc but it should give you the idea.

I did this with Particle Illusion. Marvellous!

thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the AE video.

I actually used masking for my very first time yesterday to make a couple of "shooting stars" Just long skinny bezier masks on a white gen media that I moved across the night sky of a shot of my front yard.

Works amazingly effectively, and worth the tedious work. Ultimately easier than working in the 3D program.

I never thought about the noise generators. sounds like it'll work well.

I use quite a bit of stuff from Detonation Films. They had some free stuff on their site that might have worked but I don't see it there anymore. Still lots of other good stuff.

I finally got some results with the 3D program. I thought they were awful, buteveryone else who sees them says they're cool.

I'm going to use them, but still try some of that masking.
