Studying over the WM9 HD guides, one thought occurred to me regarding DRM. Thus far, WM9 DRM has proven to be nearly uncrackable as a means of protecting content. However, within the last month, there was a break through that was quickly patched by MS.
So I was thinking of how we can further add protection, even better, identification of the offending pirate who chooses to steal. Wouldnt it be possible to add a digital watermark unseen by the viewer perhaps stored in the DRM key that is unique to the user. As an example, lets say John Doe buys a WM9 CD/DVD that has a series of numbers that are linked to that customers purchased it. I would assume it would be harder to implement for set top players since anyone an buy a player later this year and not send in a registration card or whatever.
The hard way to do it would be to encode multiple copies with different watermarks (one for each customer) but that defeats the encode once, deliver many business model. Even if you could just add a number to an already encoded file that would be a huge help.
Anyone else have any other ideas?
