OT: Really good Cinematography DVD tutorial to check out

musman wrote on 1/17/2005, 8:08 PM
Some of us are filmmakers, so I thought I'd mention this. I've gone through 4 of the 6 dvds and am extremely impressed. Learned more about cinematography and blocking than all of my previous knowledge combined and am very anxious to try out some of the techniques.
It's pricey at $480, but I think it's well worth it. If you're like me and want to go to film school but can't, it's pretty much required viewing as far as I'm concerned.
They have some sample clips online, so check them out here:

I'm sure you're kidding, but I'm probably never going to sell it. They make a big point of saying how you should watch the dvds more than once to take it all in and I definitely agree with that so far.

musman! Thank you!

Yes I've read "Grammar of the Edit" and the like . .. but this is truly superb. I don't do "storyboarded" work. However, the value of the logic I can surplant onto my Community and Event stuff, very neatly.

Just by viewing some of the examples - which are tremendously educative - I've now got a solution to a series of non-scripted shots I've got to edit today. Previously these shots were giving me a headache!

I like the direct and simple approach of the explanations. Thanks again . ..

Now how do I get them over here?

Thanks again for the heads-up,

Grazie

I read an article where Thelma Schoonmaker, Oscar-winning Editor of Raging Bull, talked about pre-viz, which are a step beyong storyboarding. Pre-viz is previsualization in which you use 3-D software to work out camera moves, blocking, and editing before you shoot an inch of film. Pretty cool. I think it was on digitalvideoediting.com

I finally saw The Aviator this weekend and I can see how the pre-viz came in handy, especially during the recreation of filming "Hell's Angel's" with dozens of planes. I thought The Aviator was great. Very funny and it looked amazing. My girlfriend, however, was distracted by early scenes, where they chose to make the film look like it was shot in 2-strip Technicolor like the early color films.

It really is a great program. Took 4 years to put together.

They'll ship overseas, Grazie could probably get it overnight via FedEx (I've had some of my customers in the UK pay for that).

. . I really am here, you know? But perhaps Coursedesign doesn't know that either. ;)

Best regards,

Grazie

ps. Thanks for the Heads up on the FedEx. Much obliged.

Do you know the people who made it? Sounds like it. I'm just trying to help them out, although there's a part of me that I'm not so proud of that kind of wishes no one else sees the dvds. Feel like it gives me an edge. Then again, it would be nice to have people to discuss the dvd's techniques with.
Anyway, the dvds are truly great and I wish the makers all the luck in the world with this product.

Grazie, was "Grammar of the Edit" any good? Did it teach you much?

Apologies! . . Its called "Grammar of the Shot" . . . not Edit .. it's by Roy Thompson ... Yes loads! plus its got nice drawings to study - while you are on the train; bus; waiting in the Doctor's sugery and . . . ahem .. . other places too! If you know what I mean. he he he . . .

The section on, "Mixed Subject Reference positions" is easy enough even for me to digest. Complex? . . Yes .. . approachable? Definately! . .. I like the way Roy gioves "reasons" why somethings are incorrect - always worthwhile, sensible and stays longer in my memory when this is explained to me.

Shame it didn't work on my memory .. There is a book called Grammar of the Edit . . I don't have that one . . I will get it too . .. got editing on the brain at the moment ..

Apologies again,

Grazie

Just went to the site and watched just ONE of the samples....wow.

This is great stuff. Love things like this that are just raw information and very little " Here's what I think about that ."

Thanks for the link. Looks like Poser is something I may have to look into now.
