OT: Sachtler Soom

I was out and about and ran into a local news crew taping a piece.
The cameraman was using a pro DigiBeta on what looked like a consumer
tripod with a center column.

I thought to myself .... a "real" pro at work. Went over to talk and found out it
was a Soom. He really loves the system. I was wrong.

Anyone else use one?

Sachtler gear is generally pretty good but I've never seen this system. It looks pretty flexible but with a 75mm ball i think they're actually talking about fairly lightweight cameras (which is mostly what people on this forum would be using).

There is definitely an advantage to having the spreader part of the sticks off the ground because it makes it that much easier to set up on uneven surfaces. The tube would probably be useful at events to get some elevation.

I've never seen a news guy use baby legs but this might be handy for someone with a semi-pro kit shooting something a little more artistic than news. Generally, most news shooters I've seen have been kind of "Semi Pro" anyway, but they definitely get a routine down that works well for what they do. That's good when they're doing their usual gig and bad when they stray out of their routine.

If you envision switching a lot from standard legs to babies or monopod you should consider how that workflow is going to play out.
