OT: scan converters

A few days ago there was a discussion about scan converters. I looked at eBay and there are a gazillion scan converters ranging inprice from $ 25 all the way upto $1000. Having use camtasia on a teaching assignment with good results, I wonder if anyone on these forums has used both( hardware scan converter vs. Software camtasia) and what is the difference.

Also companies like VASST use screen shots. Is that done with hardware or software. Thanks a lot

I like using Hardware when I need a 'Live Feed'.
if I need to record both what's on the screen and the person performing the action.

Other than that I prefer Camtasia.
It's just a lot quicker.

What hardware converter do you use.(model)Also I would be very interested in recording the screen as well as the narrator. How do you set it up? Thanks

For SD the Sony 1024 Scan Converter has been a standard for ages.
Feed VGA connector via 1024, connect VCR to video outputs of scan converter.

For HD the Edirol is the go, same as above but connect HDV VCR/camera to firewire port.

Anyone have any experience with Canopus/Grass Valley Twin Pact converter.
