OT: Scan Microfiche

Editguy43 wrote on 9/20/2008, 12:14 PM
I had a client call me and wants me to scan some Mcrofiche rolls and put them on CD for storage and for people to view on computer. she does not need it to be fully searchable. has anybody ever done this or have any ideas how it can be done, I have a high quality HP scanner but not quite sure how to do this.

Thanks in advance for any help and or ideas.

You'll need a very high-res scanner AND a transparency adapter for that scanner.

Probably a better -- and much faster -- way to do this would be to find a microfiche viewer and simply photograph from the screen. This will probably give you a hot spot, since most of these viewers were optically pretty lousy, but you can probably fix that in post. The time to scan using a flatbed will probably be several minutes per image; the time for taking a picture from the viewer will probably take less than ten seconds per image, perhaps as little as five once you get going.

You'll also have to reverse the image (negative to positive) in post, but that should be easy.

Try your local library. Many have Microfiche and Microfilm viewers now that save images to a USB drive as a .jpg,. You can often email the images to yourself too.
No camera required.
