Do you buy it because you are bigger - or for the free advert as the press rolls out the print?

I recall good Quantum products and Maxtor bought them. I'm sure many others went into both companies before that. Less choice is bad, best parts of each is good.

We'll have to see, or buy/buy-more WD / Hitachi / Fujitsu / Samsung etc.

If I had had to guess I would have thought Maxtor was the bigger company.

I just bought a Seagate 300gig External Hard Drive for $150 after rebate at Best Buy. Could not pass it up!

I've had nothing but great luck with Seagate drives and nothing but horrible luck with Maxtor drives. I'm not sure what to think of this latest "merger."

i dont like the sound of this.. hope seagate arent gonna cheapen their production values by rebranding maxtor drives...

ive heard nothing but horror stories with maxtor..

i havent had an issue with seagate drives yet, and i have 7 of the buggers here..

time to go and restock on drives before things "start to happen"....

Oddly enough down here it's Seagate that's much on the nose, Mactor have a good name as do WD. Samsung are the late comers to the party but are building a good reputation.
All said we'd have around 20 HDs whizzing around and the only ones we've had consistent failures with are IBM, I've got one Seagate going south by degrees.

Yeah. I've had *one* Maxtor drive die on me.

But *all* of my Seagates and WDs have died (to be replaced by the Maxtors).

I have had only one Seagate SCSI drive crap. I have about 10 Maxtors, 4 of which are SATAS and they are functioning perfectly. I'm sure related problems are certain "batches". I stopped buying the Seagates because they cost too much and were not competetive.

I think recent vintage Maxtors have been pretty good. I know that a few years ago Maxtor was having problems.

I have 6 WD (5 that I use every day) and 2 Seagates. One Seagate is used for backup and the other I just bought. No problems so far.

I hope Seagate keeps their awesome 5 year warranty. Had 4 pata/1 sata Maxtors so south on me this year and only two were under Maxtor's one year warranty. Stopped buying Maxtors until I figured out buying the extended warranty (from retailer-$27) still makes "on sale Maxtors" come out to .31996 cents/gig.
