OT: slow and choppy DVD playback

stormstereo wrote on 7/25/2004, 6:10 AM
Yesterday I changed a setting in WMP9, under the DVD tab/advanced, due to some sound issues when playing a certain DVD. There were many additional tabs under that one. It said something like "your computer may have to be restarted for changes to take effect". After restarting, any DVD disc or image on the hard drive has choppy playback as if it were in slow-mo and the sound is horrible, almost like a super long time strech. The problem is that under the same tab in WMP there is no longer any advanced setting to be made. Just a single tab with "2 speaker, mono, stereo, dolby surround" settings. What to do?

I tried rendering a small ac3 from vegas and that plays fine in WMP.

Well, PowerDVD works perfect. But if anyone has an explanation for my WMP-problems I sure would appreciate it. And from the newsdesk: WMP 10 is around the corner.

based on the beta which you can try out now -- 10 is even worse than 9 ..

it is like MS thinks you want pretty things with no control and even worse performance -- but do want things like searching on the internet for media ID tags for every clip you play even when it is my own videos or keep trying to download codecs , when they are already installed .. or still not getting aspect ratio's correct - or allowing you to adjust them on the fly or zoom in .. or a host of other unwanted/unneeded "features" ...

I endorse Media Player Classic.... someone on these boards recommended it to me because I wanted a free DVD player that would playback with true 5.1 audio. Most of them will NOT play back 5.1 audio on 5.1 speakers; they downmix to 2 channels and then the sound driver or software somehow upmixes it back to 5.1 but proper placement is lost. Then I noticed that most programs require you to buy the full version to get 5.1 playback with 5.1 speakers.

MPC, though, is GPL, works great, has good features, and hasn't given me any trouble. Only problem I have is that I can't convince Windows to use it when I double click a file, even though I set the file type to play through MPC.

Another nice thing about MPC: like DVD-A2, if you open an MPG file, it will look for an AC3 file with the same name, and if it finds it, plays them together. WMP doesn't even PLAY AC3s at all(just like Vegas, sigh). Much better way to preview your files before mastering to DVD.

It sounds like I have to have a look inte MPC.

On another note - Jayson - my WMP9 plays ac3's rendered from Vegas. What's up with yours?

WMP9 will play ac3 (and dts) files if you install an ac3/dts codec for it ..
