There's been rumours of such a development for some time now. Given that Panasonic announced a similar camera only a few days ago Sony's timing seems apt. The announced release date is also within the timeframe that Canon gave to release a functional 35mm camera.

I do have to wonder about using the alpha mount. The industry standard for 35mm is the PL mount and for good reason. The biggest difference I see with this camera is getting full raster external monitoring over HD SDI. I'd be happy enough getting full raster over HDMI. Of course the big question will be what will it cost and how many will get a ROI out of it.

"... the big question will be what will it cost..."

Well, the gentleman in the video used the words "entry level" describing the camera and "for every budget" relating to cost.

As the old saying goes, "One man's ceiling is another man's floor."

After working for a rental company for a few years and watched the plight of many in this business, the core issue to me is return on investment. I was reliably told last year in LA I could rent a RED for $50 a day. That's absurd. That doesn't even cover the cost of the paperwork let alone insurance, cleaning and testing.
The number of people offering their service for free seems to be on the increase at the moment and in the long term this is a bad omen.

Your mention of the RED reminded me...

Before the RED was released, everyone was tripping over themselves to pre-purchase the new under $20,000 camera that was going to revolutionize filmmaking.

Well, that was one I saw coming. The under $20,000 was for the body, and I do mean body, only!

A RED package here in Miami goes for $995 a day. Considerably more than $50 a day!

"A RED package here in Miami goes for $995 a day."

That sounds right for a package from a reputable rental company that can support you if something fails, tests everything and knows the camera inside out. On the other hand there's those who borrowed the money from Mum to buy that $20,000 body thinking they'd make money on it and now can't pay the rent.

We're making good money renting out the various bits and pieces to make a 5D/7D into as useable a camera as it can be. Matte boxes, filter kits, rods, monitors, FF gear, you name it, we've got it. Same kit is good for just about any camera too, even that new Sony one when it arrives. Still mulling over a lens package, that's a tough one.

RED in NYC goes for $600 and if i whine enough i can get it for $500. And we are talking a full package with top of the line mattboxes, monitors and cine (yes, cine) lenses. That said it, so what i i still need a 2 men team to run it (AC + offloaded).
