OT: Sony Licenses SmartSound Patents

An interesting article appeared today: Sony Licenses SmartSound Patents.

Is it possible there were patent problems with Cinescore and that's why there has been so little developement, and the appearance of a dead product? Well if that's the case then it appears to be resolved. Hopefully SMS will make an annoucement to let us know there is a future in Cinescore, or they just going to dump it and use Smartsound, doesn't appear so but it would be nice to know.

You think! Patents can be pesky for companies sometimes. Hopefully Sony wasn't sitting on their laurels during the negotiations so hopefully there will be a whole bunch of Themes coming our way...

Anything is possible, and I don't use Cinescore, so I don't know if it has been abandoned. However, patent licenses like this are often the consummation of a "friendly" legal dispute where one company calls the other to notify them of possible infringement of their patents. Rather than litigate, both parties usually enter into a cross-licensing agreement where each party agrees to license the other's technology. Most of the time, little, if any, money actually changes hands. The lawyers still get involved, but at far lower rates than trying to litigate.

That's probably what is going on here. As to Cinescore, if there was any question about infringement, that might have slowed release of new versions. Therefore (and this is total speculation on my part), you might see something from Sony in the next 3-4 months.

I just hope the add SmartSound into Vegas. They have some good libraries that customers can browse when they don't know what sort of music they want.

Maybe Sony has been adding to the library all along, but not releasing until this was settled? That would mean there are some releases stockpiled. Maybe they can give us a discount for waiting so long??? (Ha Ha).

Also another possibility: Cinescore could now maybe support Smartsound content?

Hopefully we find out sooner and not later.

Edited: After rereading, it sounds like support of Smartsound content is not involved. It appears that Sony wrote Cinescore and infringed on Smartsound patents in the process. At least we should expect more Sony content in the future.

I've bought into both, been with Smartsound for a long time. It's got integration with several NLEs but I could never understand why not Vegas. With the multilayer libraries letting you do your own mix in Vegas the whole thing rocks but tighter intergation to reduce the number of steps involved or even having Smartsound read Vegas's markers would be a big step forward.
Cinescore seems more capable than Smartsound but so far the speed of choosing a track in Smartsound makes it a no brainer when the client is choosing the music with you.

Also, we're at Vegas 7.0e and still cannot export from SmartSound directly to an open Vegas project like we can to v6. I cannot imagine that v7 poses such an amount of difficulty for them to make the enabling update.

I did ask via their support, but all I got was it's coming RSN. Hmmm ...

Ok, I have Vegas 7d and Smartsound 4.5.

Here's how it works for me. If I have a multi-track Smartsound selection, when I say export soundtrack, it lets me select an export of individual tracks and also lets me select a send to Vegas 7.

When I export, it prompts for a location for the WAV files and then upon completion it bring up Vegas and the clips are in the media pool waiting to be put on the timeline.

Is that what you were expecting, or is there something else that should happen?

Thanks for your reply psg.

Seems that after my post, the new version was released, taking it to v4.5. I am still at 4.2.

Strange tho' that when I do an update check through SS, it doesn't tell me that a new update is available. I have it now, thanks to you.

And the behaviour you see is exactly what I'd expect it to do, but hasn't been at the level I am using. Good to hear if behaves correctly at v4.5.

Upgraded last night, works a treat.
I see SFPro now supports a shared library if you upgrade to the network version and Backstage, could be something interesting in there too.
Being able to create Smartsound files out of Acid or Cinescore would get me interested. Not on the creation side as I'm no musician but being able to pay a composer to do a piece in Acid and have them deliver it as a Smartsound file would be very convenient for when the client wants to add/delete a few seconds of video.
