OT: Sony RX100 Mark III -- Just got mine

Just got a Sony RX100 Mark III. $800 for a 1" sensor, pop-up EVF, faster lens. – I used it immediately on a tour of the Battleship USS Iowa. I'm impressed. The camera is the size of a point-and-shoot pocket model so no one on the tour was spooked by the camera. I wore it on a small belt pack when not in use.

I whipped this video together in a few days. About 99% of the footage and stills are off the RX100M3. I shot using the AVCHD mode, 60i 1920 x 1080 17M. I did not do any CC in post. I did use Sony stabilizer in post on one of the shots. All of the live sound is off the RX100M3. I boosted some of the audio in post to make it audible. There’s one shot where you can hear the camera’s zoom working. Naturally, everything was available light. Rendered using Sony AVC Internet template (1280 x 720)

Looks great aside from the Vegas smart-resampling.

Can you explain what that is, Laurence?
How does one see the Vegas smart-resampling in the video?
Laurence wrote on 6/26/2014, 4:21 PM
Lots of double images. Vegas smart-resampling always introduces double images if the frame rate changes at all.

It only happens if you change to a lower frame rate like 60p down to 30p,but if you change from 60i to 60p you sure want to leave it on.

This is interesting. Are you seeing double images throughout the video or are you mainly talking about the trucking shot on the ship model between 3:10 and 3:28 ? ... This shot has a velocity envelope at 52% and also has Sony Stablizer effect applied. I thought it far better to leave smart resample on than disabled on this. I'm certainly weak on my skills with frame rates, interlace, smart resample etc.. The render did reduce the format from 60i 1080 to 30p 720 ..

Was there some way to make this look better?

Enjoyed that video, good job! That camera takes some really nice video!

I have 2 cousins who served in the navy, one of which was a submariner captain, Annapolis grad just retired and a drinking buddy who served on the Nimitz. I, like my dad and a few uncles, are a Go ARMY vets but Navy guys are definitely all right in my book! My brother is an Air Force Col and, well, they're OK too! (;

I did notice some of the smart-resampling ghosting on the fast panning scenes, but didn't take away from the video itself, imho. The only thing that I'd like to have seen was maybe some lower 3rds of the names of the vets who were in that vid.

Thanks for sharing!

On second look I believe I'm mostly seeing double images due to a blend fields deinterlace. I don't really like interpolate deinterlace any better. My favorite would be a decomb or smart deinterlace like you get in Handbrake. I see the ghosting throughout.
TeetimeNC wrote on 6/27/2014, 4:51 PM
Xberk, I really enjoyed watching the video. The minor ghosting didn't interfere with my ability to enjoy it at all. I think you did an outstanding job cutting the video, and the audio was also very acceptable considering it was the onboard mic. I liked the music as well.

I have toured the USS North Carolina a couple of times, and I served on the USS Springfield, a guided missile cruiser that served as the flag ship and carried the fleet admiral. So your video brought back some nice memories for me. I have one of those brass 6 inch shell casing ashtrays here in my office somewhere. If I could time travel back I would want to take some similar footage of life on the Springfield.

Interpolate deinterlace does not exhibit ghosting, it is the recommended method for any video that contains motion, I have almost never used blend.

Of course, Yadif deinterlace is preferred over either interpolate or blend, that's what the default method is in Handbrake and there is also a Yadif plugin for Vegas.

Thanks guys for some of the nice comments on the video. I got the RX100M3 the day before. I used auto settings for everything. Still learning the camera -- but for sure not sending it back.

That's set in the project properties ... right? ... not in the render template? I had it set for blend so that's something I can easily change.

I have never learned how to do the Handbrake thing or using the YADIF thing, that seems complicated to me. But thanks for the link to the YADIF for Vegas Plugin. I'm downloading it to try.

" ... the YADIF thing, that seems complicated to me."

It's not complicated.

I was able to do it.

That proves my point right there.

I enjoyed the video.

I'm definitely in the Blue A Quadrant. That sometimes keeps me from seeing the forest until I count all the trees.

Yes.

>>It's not complicated.

I downloaded the YADIF plug-in. It shows up in the Media FX but it's over my head. Temporal - Spatial - Field Order - Parity .. Lots to learn.

just shoot progressive.... don't have to worry about blend, interpolate, field orders...forget about it !!!
enjoyed your video

I see that if I do the script "Apply Yadif to All Media" that it does all the settings for me .. or uses defaults.

I'm going to change the project properties to De-Interlace "None", then run the "Apply Yadif to All Media" script and re-render using the same Internet Template I originally used.

Will that do it? That seems reasonably simple.

Good advice. Next time. RX100M3 will shoot progressive. Meanwhile, I'm learning something new.

Re-rendered as indicated above. At first look, I thought it looked cleaner. But not sure. Not a huge difference. The trucking shot at 3:10 is worse, I think.

Well thanks guys for the nice comments and the help with getting the De-interlace right (especially John for the plug-in and script link and Laurence for even mentioning the problem) .. I have to say the YADIF plug-in and script is easy enough to install and use.

It's very fast to apply, just weird that it doesn't tell you it's done it's thing when it has. All I could see is the events on the timeline rippling a bit from beginning to end and then a second time but not all the way through and it seemed to be done.

I also have to say I don't really see a big difference myself, excepting I thought the trucking shot with the velocity envelope at 52% looked worse. I found this note with the YADIF plug-in. "Please note, that due to restrictions of how Vegas works, this plugin cannot be used when making smooth slow-motion from interlaced video (stretching the video 2x)." This accounts for it looking worse but the YADIF is easily removed from just that one event.
