I use a Canon G15 (current model is G16). I carry it with me every day in my briefcase. If you want manual control, there's a button or dial for everything. It's not as diminutive as the Sony RX100. The Sony probably shoots better video.

Certainly looks a contender John. (G16) Looks pretty rugged too.

Very happy with Sony RX100 Mark III. I love the 1" sensor .. shoots great stills in all light levels .. terrific video too with decent sound. You can actually get DOF shots too. It's slightly heavier than most pocket cameras but it does fit in my shirt pocket. I prefer using a case on my belt as I keep my Cell phone in the shirt pocket. Battery life is good for me. Main thing it so easy to carry that it is there ready to go all the time. Not good for nature shots (animals in the wild). No long lens. That's the only draw back I can see in a "vacation" camera.

I have the Sony RX100 mark ii, but the mark iii is the way to go. Built in view finder and averaging instead of skipping lines for far better low light noise performance as well as better avoidance of aliasing and moire.

And a good video review:

For anyone considering a stills cam, who also shoots video, the Panasonics, imho, are really the way to go. Way ahead of everyone in this regard.

Looked at the LX100. One nice feature lacking in all the competing cameras is a "time lapse" mode. I'd love to have that in the RX100 Mark III.

Take a look at the Ricoh GR. I bought one several months ago. Fixed lens, but the lens is perfectly matched to the (large) sensor. Tack sharp and very pocketable.

(Edit) it does video, too, but that's not why I bought it. probably cross this one off your list...

Arthur, I don't know where you'll be traveling but I'd like to make a recommendation and that is to travel the north shore of Lake Superior from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay, preferably in the summertime. The country side is beautiful and the views of the lake, as long as the fog doesn't get in the way, are gorgeous. The fact that I grew up along that stretch of highway and get back there as often as I can has no bearing on my recommendation :)

Comparing reviews (and the thoughts here) It looks like a toss up between The RX M3, Lumix 100, and the Canon G7 X. As always when doing this stuff, there's always ONE darn tech feature on each one that the others don't have. The ability to just toss the RX into a shirt pocket is kinda making it favourite at the mo.

Been in the USA many many times, but this is our 1st time in Canada. My daughter is in Calgary Mike, so those destinations will probably have to wait a while. I'm intending a mini tour around Banf, and Vancouver island - and of course I'll be there for the Calgary stampede. We'll be in Canada for almost a month. Love to hear any more recommendations! :-)

Arthur, you'll love Calgary and the drive from there up to Banff is definitely worth it. I did it several years ago and the mountains are, to say the least, very impressive!!
I've been to Vancouver (loved it) but never got over to the island.
Enjoy my country!!

With three possibilities, it's probably time to go touch some hardware.

The Canadian Rockies is one of our favorite travel destinations. Banff, Lake Louise, and a drive up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper is an absolute must. If you drive to Vancouver, a stop at Wells Gray Provincial park is also recommended--the waterfalls are magnificent. And finally, if you go to Vancouver Island, Victoria is another must--my wife and I visit at least once a year, especially in May when the gardens are so beautiful. Easy for us, since we live right across the Strait on the Olympic Peninsula.

Regarding camera choice, although bulkier, consider a super-zoom (I use a Panasonic FZ-200 (25-600)--the newer FZ1000 also does 4K). IMHO, the 75-80 upper limit would be a real limitation. For a pocket camera, I use the older Panny ZS-20--small sensor, but a decent zoom (24-480) and it does record 1080 60p video.

Regardless, you WILL enjoy the scenery. Have a good trip.

Most small cameras these days have a small sensor giving high depth of field. In moving back to a (D)SLR after many years of small digital cameras, I found this something to be considered again. If you plan to take selfies, a large sensor will be a problem.

Also, small cameras often have a high zoom range. I couldn't live with only a 3X zoom these days.

One of our favorite Canadian Northwest tours is Calgary to Edmonton, then to Jasper and down to Banff; on to Vancouver and take the ferry from North Vancouver to Vancouver Island. If you stay in Victoria I can recommend the Hotel Chateau Victoria, just a long block from the inner harbor, quite reasonably priced and very comfortable.

Canada's a grand country and no better way to see it than by car.

"If you plan to take selfies, a large sensor will be a problem". No Peter...my face would be the problem! LOL.

Thanks to all for your advice. Camera and travel tips! To be boring, I've decided to take a rain cheque on the Christmas pressie, and buy in May, just before I go. I reckon there'll be an M4 version of the Sony by then with 4K. Looking forward to Canada already. :-)
