OT: Stock Footage Coop

Stock footage can be expensive. I know I often shoot stuff just to have on hand for future use.

What do you think of the idea of a central place to trade "stock" footage. Kind of a clearing house.

People could share their footage. Some logistics would need to work out on ownership and rights, but I know I would be willing to take part in something along these lines.

Anybody else have thoughts.

It's an excellent idea. Problems could loom though.
You're looking at being able to move and store a lot of data which equals costs. Just to cover the admin and bandwidth costs I can see people would have to pay a bit.
Maybe this would work better on a P2P system?

My thoughts are the site would contain low res versions, with a few capture full res stills. Then for a small fee to cover costs, the material could be delivered in some format (DVD disk as a DV AVI).

Probably discount multiple items per disk - as covering cost is the real target.

I had an idea about doing this one. My thoughts were to offer previews on the web for people to view and then after they selected the media they desired, it would be either shipped on MiniDV or data DVDs with AVI files . The only costs involved would be for the media and shipping. But I never followed through with it because I would be spending all my time archiving and cataloging and wouldnt turn a profit.

I would be interested in contributing on a limited basis with a project of this type but theres no money to be made especially off of other people's work. ;)

Actually, I might be able to help with this. I have a 6 Mb/s connection - small by typical file-distribution standards, but we're a small community. I am stuck in a term contract and not using the bandwidth so it's a sunk cost for me. And I have over a terabyte of free disk space, too.

I would be willing to host this, if you want to do the rest of the work.
