I used to work in live news and the like and usually I would read it twice quickly to myself and take it down.

Another approximation I've used is 6 seconds.

Years ago, I was told "long enough to be read aloud at a 'normal' conversational pace."

On the other hand, I've seen titles on television so by so fast that it would be humanly impossible to read them.

And credit rolls as well.

I've heard that you should be able to read them aloud two or three times at a "normal" clip. But I don't think that applies to credits.

Apparently the world record for speed reading over 600wpm.

Many TV shows seem to think we all read that fast.

Most film titles, from fade up to fade down are about 3 seconds.

I remember TV in the 80's and actually reading the credits.. now you've got credits squeezed over to the side and advertising in that space. Guess it's worth more money that way.

The fastest I ever remember seeing credits roll was a sydicated show called Monsters. Credits ran in about 3 seconds total.

I have always thought that fast credits are a shocking insult to the people to whom they refer.

Erik -
seems most of your replies have steered toward credit rolls...and you asked about a name ID for a person on screen....

For a name ID, I usually default at 5 seconds. Someone else said 6, you might hold it for 4.

Long enough to be read is a fine answer... I don't think there's a hard and fast rule...

What Ed said is my advice....if it's just a name it should be less than a name with a title etc. If it's something long I actually time it with a stop watch while I read it slowly and add a slow fade to tell the really slow readers to hurry up and finish : )

In recommendations given to me, I have been told that titles, and names should appear long enough for a person to read it three times.

This usually boils down to an average of 5 seconds for me.
