After few days of considerable research, I settled on the Dell UltraSharp U2711. I've read nothing but rave reviews on it from (magazine/Web site) editors and users alike. Several Apple users even say it surpasses Apple's Cinema Display.
The monitor was purchased from GenuineBatteries.com, a relatively unknow company in Arizona. After several Google searches, I stumbled across these folks quite by accident. They offered the monitor at a considerable savings over anyone else I had found. I did find one other place that offered the monitor for $30 less. To make a long story short, GenuineBatteries beat their competitor's price by another $5, plus free shipping.
After the deal was consummated by the sharing of the plastic, I asked the guy how they could afford to sell these monitors so inexpensively (relatively speaking). He said they bought them in bulk directly from Dell, but they were having a hard time selling them. He was keen to know how I found them, and I explained. It seems they are struggling getting their name out there and establishing a presense on the Web.
So if anyone is looking to upgrade his computer monitor, and if you like Dells, then give these guys a try.
Once the monitor arrives, I'll report back, if anyone is interested, on its performance.
