OT: Using HVX200 to make web video

ScottyLacy wrote on 5/24/2007, 9:29 PM
Hey all,

I've recently purchased the Panny HVX200 and one of my first projects is to make a small training video intended for web distribution.

My question: anyone have any tips on what settings to use when the destination is the web? I'll be shooting in DV tape mode, so I assume I should acquire the footage in 480/30p mode for the most seamless transition to computer viewing. Is there anything else I should know? Do any of the preset scene files work particularly well for web delivery?

Thanks to anyone who can pass along a few hard-won tips when shooting this camera for web output.

Thanks,
Scott

In general for the web, start out with the highest quality, best-lit video you can get and then just convert to the format of your choice. You could do some tests, but I don't think you need to start out using progressive. The converter will make progressive frames when creating web video. I would do a 1 minute test and see if you see a difference.

If you have the right computer setup, and don't mind the HDV workflow, HDV will give you better web video than SD simply because you are starting with more pixels.

If I had a P2 card, I'd probably use a higher-res mode. Alas, for the moment, I'll have to go SD.

Are you saying that the conversion to progressive is the same whether done in camera or in Vegas?

One last bump as I'm leaving to shoot in about an hour. Does anyone have any wisdom as to whether it's preferably to shoot 30p or 60i if the destination is a web video? I unfortunately didn't have enough time to perform any tests on my own.

I'm shooting SD. My guess is that the same pulldown is at work in either case, and that the results should be fairly similar. Just curious if anyone else has made a side-by-side comparison using the HVX or any other camera for that matter.
