OT: Video/Smart Phone Issues

Jay Gladwell wrote on 9/10/2011, 8:46 AM

I got an e-mail from a client this morning. They're having trouble using the new QR barcode the smart phones use to view a video we produced for them back in February. He says, "With a Blackberry it plays the audio but not the video. With an iPhone it won’t play anything at all. ... Is there anyway that you can make it so that anyone scanning the barcode will be taken to this site? Or do you know any other option to make this work?" The video file provided to the client was H.264.

So I'm interested in your thoughts/opinions: What is the responsibility (if any) of the video producer in such a case? I was contracted to produce and deliver the video, not deal with IT and/or smart phone issues.

Agreed? Yea or nay?

TIA

Thanks, Steve. I forgot to mention, they are trying to get users to connect to YouTube, where they posted the video.

The site you provide is having its own issues. The sections "Important Notes" and "Adding Custom Controls" is all messed up--overlapping one another, making it impossible to read.

I suspect the problem is with the html, not the barcode (as I'm pretty sure the barcode merely references a URL). I did some testing on this some months back and just tested it again with an iPhone & IE9 Edit: My son tested this on his Blackberry & it played although he didn't have the bandwidth for smooth playback. Here's the URL: http://www.jazzythedog.com/testing/JWPtest.html

Here's the html:

Jerry, if it's the HTML then it's YouTube's problem, is it not?

What happens when the client just navigates directly to the YouTube video using their device? Does it work as expected? If it does, but the QR (Quick Response) doesn't work, then there may be something embedded in the link that the QR is providing that is causing the issue.

It's easy enough to test. Here is a link to an on-line QR generator that you can use to create a new QR / URL link graphic. Just use the dropdown to specify an URL type QR and fill in the link and what size QR graphic you want.

Here is a link to an on-line QR decoder if you want to test a page with a QR graphic or to just upload a QR graphic image for testing.

"I got a movie about a horse on my iPad - did I win anything?"I'll buy you a cup of coffee if you ever get near the Wilmington, DE/Philly/Baltimore area. No, wait! I owe you more than that for the SnagIt recommendation. Make that the beverage of your choice. :-)

Input appreciated, but the original question was never addressed.

Former user wrote on 9/12/2011, 8:00 AM
From my earlier post:

What happens when the client just navigates directly to the YouTube video using their device? Does it work as expected? If it does, but the QR (Quick Response) doesn't work, then there may be something embedded in the link that the QR is providing that is causing the issue.

As I mentioned, if the YouTube video does not play correctly on their device regardless of how it is accessed then it's an encoding / player issue. If the video does play correctly when accessing the video via some other method then I suspect the URL being provided by the QR graphic.

Do you have a link to the page and/or resource that is displays the QR graphic? Please provide it either as a link or an image of the QR so that I (or we) can analyze the embedded link to try and determine what the link is, or is not, doing.

Just trying to help -- but then again -- maybe I'm completely misunderstanding the question?

Jim, I truly appreciate your willingness to help. But I simply do not have the time to be every thing to every client.

The original question was: What is the responsibility (if any) of the video producer in such a case? I was contracted to produce and deliver the video, not deal with IT and/or smart phone issues.

Where does the producer's responsibility end?

Former user wrote on 9/12/2011, 8:28 AM
Jay,

The first couple of questions in your original post that I read (which is what I was offering help with):

"Is there anyway that you can make it so that anyone scanning the barcode will be taken to this site?"

But, the 3rd question from your original post, that you quoted:

"What is the responsibility (if any) of the video producer in such a case? I was contracted to produce and deliver the video, not deal with IT and/or smart phone issues."

I think that question answers itself - No it's not your problem, it's their web developers problem.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Jim, now I see how the OP was confusing. I was including that information merely for "illustrative" purposes--to show what they were asking for well after the fact.

My aplogies for muddying the water.

Former user wrote on 9/12/2011, 8:47 AM
No problem. Now that I've read the OP again I see what you are talking about. I primarily develop websites, but it almost all cases, I encode videos for the sites myself so this is less of an option for me -- I have to make it work ;-)

I recommend to most of my clients that want to stream videos on their site(s) to use a "paid for" resource like Longtail - Bitsontherun (which are the developers of JW player). That way my clients get controllable playback with no extra, unwanted, content like you get with YouTube, and they get compatible playback across multiple platforms, including mobile devices.

In fact, my clients were finding that YouTube streaming was being blocked by many corporations, especially internationally, which was limiting my clients website marketing efforts. Using Longtail for streaming avoids this. And with Vimeo now offering a pro version, they sound like they could be a good option as well.

Thanks, Jim, I will pass that information along to my client.

interesting times as they say....

what are we now? certainly no longer just simple video producers, that's for sure.

nearly all my clients in the past couple of years have started asking me about various ways of getting their video 'out there', be it you tube, smart phones, etc., and i'm still giving the same answer; i can render your video to ANY format you want, mp4, wmv, mpg, avi, etc., etc., HOW you then use it is up to you and your web / marketing team. if there's any problem, certainly get them to contact me and we can talk dirty to each other, but the end result will always be the same - i will supply you video in whatever format you need - i WILL NOT get involved trying to make it work in any device ;-)

oi vey, wasn't vhs simple by comparison....

Jay Gladwell wrote on 9/12/2011, 9:12 AM

Jim, how does one contact you?

Jay Gladwell wrote on 9/12/2011, 9:15 AM

"HOW you then use it is up to you and your web / marketing team."

Yes, I use Sorenson Squeeze and can deliver any format they want. Like I tried to explain to them, that is an entirely different technology.

I love doing the web delivery stuff. It's a great learning experience.

At age 64, I'm fending off Alzheimer's.

I emailed you from the forum, but hadn't heard back. I didn't realize that my "email from the forum" option wasn't turned on. It's on now if you'd like to email me using the forum email feature.
