have a quick, freebie for charity, project where i want a video camera viewfinder graphic, you know the sort, battery, flashing red light, etc., to use over their appalling hand held hd footage - yes, they bought a camera but didn't think to ask anyone how to use it, nor how to turn on it's steady shot!!!

can't find any images through google - anyone have something i could use please?

Can you open the LCD door on such a camera and photograph it? Choose from pointing at a green screen or keep the lens cap on for black background.

EDIT

Then there is Mercalli!

I got this one by Googling "video viewfinder overlay" (third hit down on the Google page). Looks like they want a dollar for it, though I'm sure the links lead to other freeware ones.

thanks gents - riredale, you obvious have the wording for googling ;-)

my 'video camera viewfinder' and variations thereupon turn up sweet fa....

$1 will not break the bank ;-)

btw. now that's interesting - just used your search phrase (in australia) and your link DIDN'T show up?

In the future, you can make one yourself even without a sophisticated graphic design app. Use Paint that comes with windows. Create the typical overlay using the line tool, the font tool and a red circle (making it large enough to be scaled since you'll be exporting a .bmp). Place it all on a pure green background. Import the .bmp into your project and key out the background. Voila!

i've made countless mock up matts for dslr's and video cameras in the past - but looking through them they all looked 'dated'. i found this http://footage.shutterstock.com/video.html?id=811531, but $80's a bit steep i reckon.

this is a freebie for a local charity and i wanted something rough and ready - which riredale found, for a dollar, but that was before i realised nb has a viewfinder in essentials v. (which i might just load), even though it is rather tacky....

anyway, it'll be out the door tomorrow am, so thanks everyone....

You probably know this already, but I thought I'd offer this for others that might read the thread if they are trying to do something similar.

You can add a little (well, actually probably more than you usually use) vignetting and desaturate it to help sell the viewfinder look. It sounds like I did exactly what you are trying to do recently. I had good video from my cam and then one of my subjects had a cam that I was going to use as POV footage... until it came back too shaky. My partner made a viewfinder overlay in Photoshop (she used layers for each element, including a red dot -- which I just turned on and off to make it blink). The near black-and-white desaturation and vignetting took an otherwise cheap-looking overlay and helped sell it.

Sorry I saw this thread so late. The overlay I used is very simple, I'm happy to share if you're still in need of one.
