OT: Viewing PDF's within IE7

Former user wrote on 10/23/2006, 8:06 AM
I seem to have run across a problem (at least on my system) with IE7. Can someone that has installed IE7 confirm that they cannot view PDF's within their browser? Since installing IE7, when I click on a PDF link all I get is a blank page -- no error or IE crash -- just a blank page. I've done some looking around on the net and cannot find any references to this, so it might just be me...

BTW - It happens on all pages with PDF download links (even microsoft.com). Also, I am running a "older" version of Reader on my system (5.5) because the newer version(s) caused HTML, HTM files on my system to default to standard windows icons and the only way I could get the correct icon / app association to return was to drop back to Reader 5.5.

Thanks.

Jim

Are you using the ADOBE reader?

If so it would have a PLUG-IN for IE. YOu might check to see if there is an update so it can run on IE7.

I thought it might be IE7 breaking the older version(s) Acrobat so I bit the bullet and installed Acrobat 7. I can now view the PDF's within IE (and my HTML icons are okay now ;-)

I develop websites and am worried that I will have to inform clients that the newest version of Acrobat is required for viewing PDF's on their websites if their customers update to IE7. But, then again, ALL internet users of IE7 will have to update to at least Acrobat 7 in order to view a PDF, not just my clients. It's just that I have not be able to find a single reference to this issue on any source (including Adobe and/or Microsoft) and any potential customers of my clients might not be able to resolve the issue on their own.

I guess I can add some dialog to the PDF links / download Acrobat reader links on my clients site(s) that states "if you recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 and just get a blank page when attempting to view our PDF documents, then you will need to update your copy of the free Acrobat Reader to the latest version. Follow this link to download the latest version." Or something to that effect.

Thanks again.

Does anybody know if Flash8 works okay on IE7? Can you see videos on YouTube?

Yep. Youtube flash videos play just fine on my install of IE7.

Since we're on the subject. I'm trying to load a PDF file into my time line and discovered that V6 doesn't support it. What must I do to be saved? I can't seem to find a way to convert it to a new format. I don't have PhotoShop just the free install of Acrobat.

In AAR use "Snapshot tool" and paste into something like MS Paintbox. Save as anything you want for Vegas: BMP, PNG, JPEG .. . Load into Vegas. Just done it within Sony Vegas Movie studio 4. Should work the same for Vegas!

Make sure you have the Adobe Acrobat Reader Toolbars active and use the snapshot tool. Easy!

I'm not getting it. MS Paintbox?
I thought you meant copy and pasted but thats not it, right?

Apologies ThomW!

Yup, MS Paint - not Paintbox.

MS Paint is a Windows utility.
Start>Accessories>Paint

I'm using window XP with Office XP Small Business. I don't see Accessories or Paint beyond Start. Last night after your last post, I searched for MS Paint and downloaded Paint.NET. It got late and now, this morning, I've opened it up and found that it doesn't seem to support PDF and was unable to do anything with it. It would have been nice if the site I found this download had told me that it didn't support PDF before I went through the download proccess.
Bottom line. Still stuck

Are you serious? You DON'T have MSPAINT.EXE as part of your Microsoft XP Operating System? Woaaahh..!

OK, Search for mspaint.exe .

And NO you don't import PDF into it. Open your PDF in Acrobat Reader and copy a section FROM the PDF using the Acrobat Reader "Snapshot Tool". You do this by dragging out an area and going COPY. Then OPEN MS Paint - I still find it hard to believe you don't have it? - and go PASTE. You can then SAVE this MS Paint "pasted" image in several types: PNGS and JPEGS are good for Vegas.

After Your comment I thought. Well then I need to call in a favor. Sent the attachment to a friend who didn't see what the problem was and sent it back to me in a jpeg format. Unlike Giligon, this 3 hour tour that landed me on an island was finally resolved in 3 steps.
Now, what happen to mspaint?

Try reading my post above, I think the question got answered some time ago.
