For 3D titles I like Cinema 4D for the absolute most advanced stuff. Ulead Cool 3D for quick and dirty. For 2D I use Photoshop for advanced and or the built in Vegas titler for quick and dirty.

Cinema 4D definitely does not qualify for the fast category, but you can build anything you can imagine.

That's pretty funny. :) (Been there...)

If you really want something polished ( like CNN stuff somebody mentioned ), that's mostly done in 3D programs ( especially if you want rotating logos ) and compositing apps.

Lightwave seems to be the most popular among TV folk, but any good 3D app will do ( XSI, Max, Maya, Cinema4D ).

You can't expect something like that from Vegas, or Premiere, FCP, or any NLE . Not even close.

I like the stuff I can do with Heroglyph. It does the handwriting effect as a trivial exercise (you can do one in two minutes). It does the Star Wars credit roll (if you like / want that). It does text moving on a path (you draw a path and the letters follow it), and lots of other stuff. If you have a tablet, you can draw stuff and put it on screen (or have your text move along it). It plugs into Vegas as generated media.

Bluff's all I've ever used besides the Vegas titler. I also use Bluff quite a pit for partical effects - can't get enough of the smoke trails.
Here's an example of Bluff titles and particle effect smoke. The flames were added in vegas but the man was a still in Bluff:

Zipster

Michiel den Outer, the owner, is a class act and is very responsive to suggestions. He just put out a little plug in that allows you to draw any line (using a screenshot as a guide if you want) and scroll titles along the path in 3D. Kicker is he gave it to me for free because I contributed to his gallery. Can't beat that.

I like the smoke coming from the cig/mouth.

Where have you used this? What's it for?

Surprised that no one has mentioned it yet but my vote goes to Chyron. They've been a broadcast industry standard for years. Unfortunately their software only works with Avid, Leitch and Grass Valley NLEs :-(
Pricing unknown.

Chyron's very expensive.

Crystal Graphics
Output your 3D images and animations in your choice of formats, including: GIF, JPEG, PNG, TGA, TIFF, BMP and PCX.

Are these the only formats Crystal Graphics exports?

J_Mac which do you use?

IMHO:
A profesional titler for Vegas must be integrated in Vegas
and suport layers and animation.
Look at Inscriber titlemotion and Postdeko
maybee better to make a good integration on one of
them instead of "reinventing" the wheel?

No, it also has AVI.
I use TGA sequences to preserve the Alpha Channel. If I'm going over black Background I do the AVI. You can also import a file as a background into Crystal Graphics, and do the animation over it, but it does not look as good as TGA Sequence into Vegas, render to Uncompressed Avi, and then adding the background in Vegas.

I built a very passable flying pieces logo similar to the Monday Night Football shield, and built a picture billboard, similar to the one on MNF last year.

It also has a cool outline Object function that will do the screen bugs in 3D glass, like NBC has now. The logos can't be to complex, or it freezzes or won't accept or complete the outline. John

It's odd that Boris Graffitti LTD isn't mentioned much, since it comes with Vegas 6 and can be upgraded to Graffitti for only $150. I have never been able to figure it out, but maybe I'm not the only one.

A lot of the smarts in Chyron I believe are in Cayman.

I'm biased, but I do love that BluffTitler. For those who are unfamiliar with this program, you can check out a wide variety of examples at my site:

The latest download version includes a ton of cool "effect" files for making creative titles... See http://www.blufftitler.us.

Don't do much editing these days but when I do, I too use Photoshop and move things with Vegas.
Second nature for me too !

Hey Ken,

You're welcome! By the way, my "BluffTitler Particle Plug-in Pak" available on my site is also useful with Vegas and DVDA. The particle shapes can be used as fun mask shapes in Vegas or as button masks in DVD Architect. The seamless textures might be useful as video or DVD menu backgrounds, too!

It's free and anyone can grab a copy by visiting:

Cheers,
Keith

Why dont use Vizrt - Viz|Artist as CNN does...
It's not cheap, but you can do mazing things with it.
