OT: warmer weather and the PS3

Watching a dvd this evening and my PS3 did something it hasn't before... the fan jumped into high gear. "Noisy" would be a conservative word for it. In fact it sounded about as loud as an Xbox360! Has this happened to others yet and any ideas on how to counter the "high gear blahs"?

The house is sitting at about 74F today and the cabinet the PS3 is in is open on the front but not on the back.... no way to open the back either (it's a wall mounted cabinet that sits over the plasma).

My brother-in-law bought one of those kits that had a HDMI cable, controller
charger (the joystick is wireless!), and it included a gizmo with fans. Keeps
his unit cool and quit! (Sam's Club <$60)

Check for pet hair or dust, but I assume that you done this all ready. A cheap alternate maybe using one of the quiet laptop coolers that the PS3 can sit on (with a temperature sensor).

I would recommend moving the PS3 out of the cabinet. It needs as much ventilation as possible and those cabinets can turn into little ovens (even with the front open.) While this might not be a big deal in the short-term, it can definitely shorten the console's lifespan.

Just my two cents.

I'll save you the trouble of moving it. Ours has been sitting out in the open (we are STILL debating entertainment cabinets) and it too has been winding up loud lately. Maybe out of the cabinet will wind up less frequently for you though. The back of that thing pumps out hot air like a convection oven. I would think that eventually it would begin recirculating its own hot air in a cabinet. That's one of the reasons it has taken us so long to get a new cabinet. We've yet to find anything that will be PS3 friendly. So far that's my only complaint about the unit (oh yeah and it's ugly as sin).

Yeah. I'm amazed at how hot it gets sometimes! My computer is liquid cooled and I've been toying with the idea of opening up the PS3 to see if there is some way of applying the liquid cool technology to it. If it keeps winding up like this, I won't have much of a choice.

PS3 uses ~175 watts. A BD player uses ~25 watts.

feel free to say how the PS3 oven-mod works as it would be awesome if you could cook a roast AND watch movies. :)

Roast with movies?
We always went with traditional pop corn and soda.

I did not realize the furniture was not open. You do need to get more
ventilation in there. Ours is a 19" rack mount with wood side panels
Open back and front. May not be as "modern" as glass shelves units
being sold today but works.
