ot - way ot - old broadcast equipment

i was just looking through some old photos (well it's sunday afternoon and i thought i'd clear up my office), and there i am, with a sony 330 3 tube and hb umatic recorder, looking at others there's a plethora of what was horrendously expensive equipment (bvw 25, 505 rig, etc., etc.,)

so whatever happens to all this stuff? i keep seeing ads for 3000 cameras, and other old 'industrial' stuff, but what becomes of the broken hearted, opps sorry, the old broadcast stuff. does it work it's way down the food chain and end up in africa?

At least some of it ends up in India. Came accross a crew while we were there only a few years back.
The term 'camera crew' was pretty apt. One guy to lug the batteries and PSU, one for the CCU and VCR and one to operate the camera, not to mention the boom op. It was a long way from the nearest vehicular access and they looked pretty hot even though the sun wasn't up.

How easy we have it today.

Some of it may end up in the hands amateurs. I have a Nova TBC that, I am told, was used at the local PBS station before they upgraded to HD. It still works fine for me. I use it for converting degraded VHS tapes to DVD. It's far from small but it works.

I remember in school using "old blue" - RCA TK76.
I have a permanent damaged shoulder bone from the weight of it.
(last year was like the 30th anniversary of that camera)

I am no longer in that type of business but somewhat related and yes a sub 7 lb
camera/deck would have been like rocket belts back then.

Ah yes. Cameraman's shoulder, as I recall.
More than one shooter locally suffered from it due to the weight of the camera :-(
A previous job had me using a Hitachi CK-2B (around 20 lb.) PLUS a Sony BVU-150 3/4" SP portable (yeah, right!!) deck. Add a battery belt and a few spare tapes (20 min. each) and a hand-held shoot was a guaranteed visit to the chiropractor.
