"They lie on the networks to protect corporations like themselves and the party that puts them first - The Republicans. "
Gimme a break. The only network that is biased toward Repubs is Fox News. The rest are moderate at best (as they should be) and most are pro Dems. Regardless, news is almost never reported without bias of some sort.
My personal hero was Christa McAuliffe, who barely had a chance to share her gift of teaching with the rest of the world.

If you get a chance (not sure where you live), visit the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, NH. You'll really like it.

And this statement exemplifies why the situation is hopeless in the US. You fall into what 80% of Americans believe consistent with the polls on Polling Report.com for years now. I just don't see how this situation can ever be reversed at this point.
I am going to stop now because I feel like I am hijacking the thread with another subject. I don't want to do that.
The bottom line is neither party is spotless. Both parties are equally culpable for the country being in the mess it is today. Anyone who believes differently is truly misinformed.

John, you need to chill out, you're going to give yourself a heart attack by taking this stuff so seriously.

Maybe my writing sounds more agitated than my actual disposition, but I speak about it all the time (with my data to back it up of course), and in a very calm manner. In terms of speaking with others who also realize that this is going on, although rare those are very productive discussions. They are usually C-Span watchers and BBC listeners for the most part.
John (Craftech),
I have a VERY high regard for you via your postings here, but I disagree with your perspective on this issue. Why is someone such as yourself a better person because they know more about what's going on in world news? What if -- instead of mass amounts of reading/watching the news -- another person spends his/her time feeding others in a soup kitchen, helping disabled youth, or even something as simple as spending time with his children, spouse, or elderly parents? I spent a number of hours watching the MJ TV coverage with my sons, and it allowed us to have great conversations about deep subjects common to all of us. I think the subject of MJ is just as relevant to a person's world as knowing about the oil fields of Iraq. It relates to our global humanity, sensitivities, the discussion of morality, etc.

Well - as the thread OP, I'm saddened too.
All the political stuff aside, I guess that:
- geniuses like Steven Hawking are about mind, reason and imagination, not heart and emotions. When they pass away, we still tend to react using our reason and imagination; not emotions
- people like Michael Jackson are about emotions; if his funeral service I considered "moving" has also been because it wasn't addressing my reasoning, but emotions.
As I mentioned before, M.J's has never been my hero (I don't care too much for his style of singing or dancing; frankly I'm one of those over-intellectual, yet also over-emotional, classical music freaks).
Still, the ceremony got on my emotions very much indeed. Is there a need to explain why? Perhaps just because he was sensitive and fragile !
Frankly, arguing about who donated more to mankind, or which political party is right or wrong, is inappropriate...

I don't feel that I am at all, and if my posts suggest that I apologize.
I blame the news media (particularly the networks) for pretty much everything that is wrong in this country not the public. They intentionally shift the pressure onto the wrong politicians, lie to the citizens even though they are entrusted to serve the public interest, and only answer to their corporate parents. What would make me the happiest is if most of the public realized it. Then they would put the pressure on them to tell the truth in addition to those politicians the media shields from public pressure. As a result of what the news media is doing, the politicians now only have to answer to the corporations via the lobbyists because there is no real public pressure on the worst offenders.
In fact they regularly appear on the networks to lie every day of the week because they know they won't be challenged. Worse the news media pundits reinforce the lies later by repeating them over and over again.
A simple listen to or viewing of the Senate live on C-Span2, the House live on C-Span 1, the hearings live on C-Span 3 followed by listening to the networks for a week will prove it to you. Try it.
You will see what goes on in the Congress and then hear the opposite of what you saw with your very own eyes on the networks.
White House press conferences live are another good one. Watch them live on C-Span and listen to the accusations hurled against Obama's press secretary by the White House correspondents from CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News, and MSNBC. The go to the RNC website and look at the latest smears against Obama and you will see for yourself that they match exactly. That in sharp contrast to the White House Press Conferences under GWB where the media was practically asleep and didn't ask any real questions about Iraq, etc. and then went back and sold the lies to the public for the Bush administration.
That of course in sharp contrast with the White House press corp under Bill Clinton where they did what they are doing to Obama which is to make accusations that exactly matched the accusations made on the RNC website.
But no, I don't feel I am better than anyone else because I know this and can provide daily data to back it up. I just think that it is pathetic that they can get away with it and I don't think it will ever change. How can it? It works.
The news media is more consolidated now than it ever was into only 5 major corporations. The newspapers are disappearing fast and a December 2008 FCC rule cross ownership change under GWB (that the networks refused to report) allows those same corporations to buy up every single newspaper in the United States.
So no, I am not angry and no I don't think I am better than anyone else (quite the opposite), and yes I want to stop this discussion as I said before and let the thread continue on about the subject that was intended - Michael Jackson.
