my webhost (featureprice) recently went out of business. can someone suggest a reliable host with decent space/transfer for under $10 or $15 per month?
This is a tad more expensive than your budget, but not by much. I pay $70/month for a commercial grade cable connection. When you consider that i was already paying $45/month just for cable internet anyway, it's really only an extra $25/month. For this price i can host my own server at home with unlimited bandwidth. My storage space is limited only to the size hard drive i put in my server. Right now i've got 50GB of space and regularly pump out over 2GB/day (60gb/month) of bandwidth. Not bad for $25/month :) Most any webhost that provides that much bandwith would be charging over $250/month.
Depending on what you want to put on your website, you may not need any effort at all to set up a server. Starting with Windows 98 and up, simple web server software has been included right in the OS. Under 98/98SE/ME you can enable Microsoft's Personal Web Server; under 2K/XP you can use a shared Web directory. In either case, all you need to do to put your files on the web is to drag them into the shared folder. Have people browse to your IP address and there's your stuff.
If you want a domain name, several places offer dynamic DNS that will point the domain to your IP address even when the cable company changes it. I use Zoneedit.com but there are plenty of others as well.
This is a good idea if you can do that, BUT, depending on what you are hosting and if the information is sensitive..I would highly suggest a hardware firewall. Piece of **** hackers are always lurking to mess things up; try to stop them anyway you can.
