OT: Which DVD burner would you buy?

stormstereo wrote on 12/15/2003, 8:34 AM
I did a search but the results was not satisfying.
If you were to buy a new DVD burner today, for use with Vegas+DVDA, which one would it be and why? Must be multiformat DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R & DVD+RW. Must be able to burn CD's as well (but I guess they all are). BTW - I use a laptop.
Thanks for helping me choose!

Pioneer A-06, not a big fan of the Sony Burners, lots of problems with the earlier models.

Pioneer.. A # 1... Under the name dvr106 you can get them OEM.. They are the least expensive.. These are the ones the computer co. buy in bulk.. OEM around 150$ im guessing now..

Perfect. Thank you very much.
Now, which media would you say are the most reliable/compatible? DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW?

DVD-R. Maxell branded (in jewell cases). See lordsmurf for one person's take on this subject. Also check the following sites:

I have the Plextor PX-708A and love it.
It burns 8x on 4x ricoh DVDR+ media (Memorex branded), I haven't tried any DVDR- media on it yet, and burns CD's at 40x.
It's the second Plextor I've purchased, the first one is now 4 years old and works perfectly.

The best value--price and performance--is Ritek media (they make discs for Verbatim). Buy in bulk and save money. SuperMediaStore.com has excellent prices, as low as $.99 per disc (500 discs). Fifty discs are $1.04 each! Copy and paste link below.

http://store.yahoo.com/supermediastore/ritek-4xdvdr-fs.html#buy

Don't fall victim to the "if it ain't expensive, it ain't any good" way of thinking. Ritek is excellent media and has great reviews from its users. We've not had one bad disc in the hundreds we've burned.

Buying individual packaged discs is very expensive--a waste of good money. Buy your DVD cases, jewel cases, paper sleeves, etc., in bulk as well. You'll save money all the way 'round.

Agreed. I just last week finished a project involving the burning of 250 (!) disks. Half were 99.9% full (4,690,000,000 bytes) and the rest were 98% of max. All were burned on a Pioneer -05 burner at 4X. Labels were Meritline glossy, printed with an Epson C80. Not a single failure, and not a single report of playability issues.

The disks? Ritek G04, bought in bulk for about $1.10 each. Perfect surfaces.

The next burner I buy will be an 8X, and I won't get one until the dust settles on that new speed--probably about this time next year.

OT--VideoCurmudgeon,

I tried to e-mail you back, but it didn't go through for some reason? (I wasn't ignoring you)... :) It wasn't anything about NLE anyway.

Stiff, not a problem. Based on what you had said, I figured you were referring to something else.

Can't imagine why the e-mail didn't get through. Certainly enough spam has.
I hate spam with a passion!
