"What gives a more complete picture is to include ripple, oftenly quoted as a percentage."

Agreed... but even hospital lab equipment is rated in percentage of ripple...and it never will be 0%

"I love 3 phase"

I would agree... 3 phase contains a lot of power and because of the multiple waves, it's great for run motors at smoother rpm's as well as attaining smaller ripple factors in power supplies... you don't have to work as hard in cleaning up a 3 phase wave set

Yes indeed, there's quite a range of fluro lights now.
If you want the best for video Osram's Studioline 55W "D" lamps are optimised for video. More expensive than retail compact fluros and they only run off electronic ballasts. You can get dimmable versions of the ballasts. Used a lot these days in studio lighting at various price points. Still way cheaper than Kinoflo and quite easy to use in home built fixtures.

Why did I go to HMI?

Already built a number of china balls using 50W CFs inside rice paper balls, work very well and very, very cheap and easy to put together yourself, you really cannot go wrong with these.

However I was looking to get more light for larger spaces and I wanted to try working with HMIs. All the HMI gear around is very expensive but when I saw I could get off the shelf parts I saw a challenge. More a case of a solution looking for a problem I think.

Also I was inspired by the lights from Chimera and Gem Lighting. Very expensive and out of the reach of most of use. I thought about trying to make my own and share what I'd found but fire proof fabric isn't easy to come by so I though about using a plastic ball. Except despite bugging many lighting places I couldn't find anything, all they had was frosted glass and that breaks too easily. I believe you do have a store in the USA that sells something suitable but I wanted something anyone, anywhere had a shot at building.

So when I was wondering through Ikea and saw that light I had found nirvana. Yes, it was meant to be used as a seat but I saw it's potential hanging from a grid or a C Stand.

Of course no one has to build one of these, it might not be what you need, a CF lamp might be all you need. All I'm trying to do is open up the field of possibilities.

There's also a range of self ballasted metal halide lamps starting to appear that might be promising, just need to find whose making them and how to buy them. Most of these kinds of lamps have a dreadfull RI and are made for aquariums or dope growing.
