OT Win 7 Permissions

How can I change Win 7 administrative permissions if Win 7 will not let me change administrative permissions when I am in the administrative mode and the permissions say I have complete control as administrator, user, name, guest, but I cannot access most files (including the registry) because I have no permission? The menu that pops up says I do not have permission for anything. Google was no help.

On the boot disk, I usually don't fool with such problems for very long. I just restore the boot image back to a known working state.

On data drives, I might fool with it a little longer.

Try this:

1. Boot in Safe Mode
2. Create a new User ID with Admin privileges
3. Reboot in normal mode and log on using this new ID
4. If the new one works OK you are half way home - you now have to go back to using your old ID and copy all the "My Documents" etc. stuff from your old ID to someplace you can get at it with the new ID.
5. After you've made sure you can get at all your stuff using the new ID you can delete the old one and all it's data (which is actually your data.)

I once had what I think may be a similar situation in XP. I was able to resolve the situation by taking ownership of the items I was unable to access.

I don't know if things have changed in Win7, but it might be worth doing a search on "take ownership" to see if that sheds any light on your situation.

It baffles me on some of the things Microsoft does like "Hit the start button to turn the computer off", 277 updates mostly for security flaws, and screwing up the GUI every model change. My security has different settings for "my name", Users, Everyone, Adminsistrator, and guest users. Now there are the "owners"? Owner, administrator, and my name are all the same.
Maybe this was a reason that Apple Mac went to the Unix based system.
