OT: Win2k and ext. hard drives: can't stop the disks the

FuTz wrote on 3/2/2004, 11:37 AM
I have been trying to use the tray icon on the right to stop my ext. drives but it always says "can't be stopped now, try later". How come? I'm not running any app right now that would use anything on these drives...
Seems to be random; sometimes, I can unswitch those without any problem and some other times, it's pain in the axe...
Any ideas to sort out this situation?

Ihave the same problem. But, on ALL other computers I hook my drive up to this problem doesn't exist. It coud be because of mcafee, but i'm not sure (never tried turning it off).

Are the drives optimized for quick removal?

In the properties of each drive, you can choose to optimize for performance or for quick removal.

I have resigned myself to log off and leave the computer running and then turn the drive out and unplug it.

Could this be related to Indexing?

I can't find an "optomize for quick removal" option. Which properties should it be in "firewire controller, drive, etc).

Oh. We were talking about 2k (in the subject).

I have indexing disabled on all my drives/folders/ etc and even in that search function. I know that's not it.

However, I DID remember that I use my drive at home via firewire. Everywhere else I use it via eigther USB 1.1 or 2. That could be a difference.

...still haven't find a way to make it work every time like with XP (on my laptop). I've been trying googling it with no success... I've also been looking into settings in Win2K but couldn't find a way.
Well, I guess I'll keep on shutting down the whole computer every time I want to swap a drive; *bummer* ! ¦(

Did you try USB 2 connections? I use my drive at work and at my parents, and it disconnects every time. At work I hook it up via USB 1.1 (do you know how long it takes to transfer 1.5 gb of wav files?!?!!?) and at my parents it's usb 2.0. It disconnects every time on thos comps! :)

i have had the same results, though i only got the external enclosure a week ago.

there have been three occasions where i was plugged in on the firewire and i was told the device did not disconnect properly, however, with the usb 2 connection, not only have i not had a problem with disconnecting, the drive is actually recognized as my wd 200jb drive in the properties box as opposed to the firewire which just sees the enclosure and mass storage.

just my experience, but it is odd.
