OT: Windjammer for Røde NT5's

UlfLaursen wrote on 2/26/2010, 7:08 AM
Hi

I recently bought a pair of Røde NT5 mics. They come with a foam windshield, which is ok, but if I want to use them outdoors I think I would need a 'hair' windjammer like the 'dead cat' I have for my NTG2.

I asked a local dealer here in Denmark on prices for Rycote, and a softie would cost $180 each!! which is out of my budget.... I know Rycote makes great products, but a bid expencive for my wallet.

I know that Røde makes a 'dead kitten' too:

They state that it is ment for Videomic and NT4, but perhaps I could use it for the NT5 too? The price is for sure much more attractive...

Thanks for any input.

Ulf,

I've gotten some "dead cat" windscreens from this eBay store. They are very inexpensive and work great! I would think they would ship to Denmark.

Also ...

... Windjammers for consumer aftermarket "hot-shoe" mics tend to be less expensive ... might be possible to adapt one ... The Rycote jammer on my HV-30 was not much (as a % of ttl cost)

That dead kitten fits over the foam windshield that fits over the NT4.
It's going to be too large to fit the NT5.
I'm not too certain how well the NT5 is going to go outdoors either, the larger NT1As and LDCs in general can "pop" pretty easily. I know the NT4 comes with a windshield and I got the dead kitten with mine but I'm still not that certain how well these kinds of studio mics will hold up with sudden varitations is air pressure. Humidity could be another problem.
Not to say you will not be fine, just that've never seen these mics used outdoors much.

Thanks, guys.

Bob, would you rather recommend to use my NTG2 outside, and then get one more?
I have the "dead cat" for that one and can just get one more for the another one.
Maybe it is kind of intentially that they do not have a dedicated winjammer for the NT5, because it is mostly for indoore use? Dont know but could be.

John thanks for the link to the store - they look great too.

The NTG2 would be better suited outdoors however I don't know how well two of them would go as a stereo pair.

One thought did occur to me. The NT4 and the NT5 use the same capsules and ideally your two NT5s should be mounted the same as the two capsules are on the NT4.
So if you mount the two NT5s on a stereo bar just right then the foam wedge thing that Rode make for the NT4 would fit. It is a bit of a beast to get on but it can be done, I just leave mine on all the time. So having got the foam on then the Rode dead kitten will fit perfectly.

I've emailed Rode once or twice with technical questions and they are helpfull.
