OT Windows 7 Permissions

After receiving a Doctorate in English politically correct language I broke the barrier in manipulating permissions in Windows 7. First change the word (mentally in your brain) "Inherited" to "copied. Then change the word 'object" to "folder" and lastly change the word "child" to "file". Then check both boxes with "Users" selected. The success made me happy for a week and I don't have that much time left.

Much as I love to laugh at some of Microsoft's conventions, I'd afraid your "translation" is inaccurate, and potentially dangerously so (OK so maybe not catastrophically so)
Inherited permissions are not copied. Inherited permissions reflect those of the parent; change the permissions for the parent and the permissions for the child change to reflect this (they may have their own, independent, set of permissions as well). If you copy permissions, they remain in place until specifically taken away. If you perform an action that would break the chain of inheritance, you are asked whether or not you wish to copy the permissions that would have been inherited.

An object (in this context) is a folder OR a file. A child (in this context) is a subordinate folder or file.

I'm glad you're continuing to find joy in your life by understanding things that have been difficult for you.

The thing that brings me so much sadness is that many of the concepts I understood once are being changed or hidden so I spend a lot more time doing things that I once did easily and quickly.

+10 Tim Stannard - anyone who wants to appreciate this should study Unix in the raw for several months... OR get rid of user accounts - you can you know?

I can get rid of user accounts???

I've often thought my Windows experience would be a whole lot nicer and smoother if there was no concept of "user", like it was back in the Windows 3.1 days. In every step it just seems to get in the way and hinder, rather than help. I'd love a config switch, maybe at install time, that disables the whole thing.

But you must be saved from yourself!

(Quiet matter of fact voice) "I can't let you do that Dave!"

@ PeterDuke

Spot on!

And after unsuccessfully grappling with Windows permissions and sharing options for an hour or so, Windows response would no doubt then be:

"Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over."

"I can get rid of user accounts???"

You don't need user accounts in Windows. I have only had one account on all my Windows installations since Windows 3.
