If you're interested in quality, search for previous posts on this, lots of good, non-obvious info.

Which HD format are you up-rezzing to? If you maintain the aspect ratio you will of course get pillarboxing.

If you are uprezzing for viewing on a PC, keep the square pixels and decide how you want to crop the original footage (or use a 4:3 aspect ratio).

For TV, you will end up with converting to anamorphic pixels, say 960x720 with 1.33 wide pixels for 1280x720.

It’s just like converting SD to widescreen. Set up your project as HD and then use pan/crop on all SD events and select Match Output Aspect.
