OT-XP Pro question

While I wait for my beloved Vegas to capture the film/TV market, I am considering making myself a bit more marketable in the immediate future by also learning Avid Express DV (now I said just CONSIDERING, all right? Just THINKING about it. As in "Oh honey, she's just a waitress, you're the one I love.) Of course--without a waitress, you don't eat....

Anyway, that NLE only runs on Win XP Pro, not XP Home which is what I have. I recall there's been threads on the advisability of upgrading from Home to Pro but I don't know how to search the topic. Any comments on the down side of upgrading rather than starting with a whole new XP Pro install?

Generally speaking, an "in-place upgrade" works fine. But I typically choose to install clean. Why add variables, I say? A clean install is easier to manage and debug if you experience any problems.

Have you tried installing it under XP Home? We've obtained dozens of applications that the manufacturers swore only ran on Pro, but every one of them has functioned properly under Home as well. Of course, most of the manufacturers then refuse to support it. *shrug* We haven't needed any support so we've decided for now to save money and not upgrade that group of computers to Pro.

Well, I work in a Tech Support capacity, and my colleagues and I have seen quite a few XP Home to Pro upgrades mangle previously installed 3rd Party software.
We ALWAYS recommend a CLEAN XP Pro installation.

Thanks all for the advice. Maybe I'll dip my feet into Avid FreeDV and see what happens. My own inclination is not to graft a new head onto the monster (upgrade from Home to Pro).

You would also have to consider upgrading your hardware, last I look it can only run on a P4 , 1go of ram etc....

Not sure if it's the same today but worth a look BEFORE buying :)
