OT: Xp "processor schedule" settings

In System Properties, Advanced, Performance, Advanced tab,Windows XP allows you to set Processor Scheduling for Programs or Background Services.

Which is better? For rendering and running FX vs. general purpose computing? Any downside to either setting?

If it makes a difference, I've got an AMD XP 2000+, 512 MB Ram, Vegas 4.

Thanks for any advice.

You want this set to programs unless you're running your computer as a server or where the system services (e.g. IIS, Firewall) should be taking precedence. This applies to editing, rendering, and any other function where you actually have to run the program to get it to do the thing you want it to.
