OT - YouTube and Private videos

I just uploaded my first 'private' video to youtube. I thought then all I would have to do is send the link out to the people concerned and they could view it. I sent a test link to my wife and naturally it came up as a private video. I had wanted the concerned parents to have access to it and then as they wished to pass it on to other family members. Is this possible via youtube?

If you set it to 'unlisted' instead of private, only people with the link will be able to view it. It may be that people can find it by searching on the title you give it but I'm not too sure.

Thank you Alan. I set it to 'Unlisted' as you suggested and it seems to work as I hoped.

Unlisted videos won't ever appear in search results within or outside YouTube, but anyone with the url can see it.

There are 2 ways to share a private video.

1. For a new upload you can do it from the upload screen, using the "Share to" box.

2. For an existing video, get into the "Info and Settings" screen for the private video. There you have a box for adding names, circles or email addresses if the video is set to private.

You can get into that "Info and Settings" either by clicking the pencil icon, bottom left under your video, or from the Video Manager, which you get to by clicking your circular icon at the top right of the screen and then "Creator Studio" and then "Video Manager" on the left and then . YouTube's interface from a creator's perspective is silly in some ways.

You can create a "circle" on the youtube channel account, and add all those concerned with the videos to the circle.

Then apply the Private permissions such that it is the circle. Then people will have to enter their gmail account info to view.

Managing access is as easy as managing people in the circle as they come and go.

This will keep the videos secured by individual gmail accounts, and not forwardable URLs like unlisted.
