Dave, I have a whole bunch of AVCHD footage from my SR11. How much do you need, and how big do you want the file size to be? If you want, shoot me an email to tcbetka@hotmail.com and we can talk more about it.

TB,

Are you happy with your SR11? I'm thinking about getting one, but was wondering if I should maybe just wait until CES 2009 to see what's next for the successor. Think I should wait? It's just a few months before they're probably going to announce the new ones.

Well, to wait is up to you of course--but the SR11 is an incredible camera. We absolutely love ours--my wife can handle it easily, and she zips through the menu system with ease now. The thing is built like a tank and shoots awesome footage. I looked at the Canon cameras (which are rated higher than the SR11/12), but in the end the construction of the Sony units is what won me over. I bought my unit from Abe's of Maine, as they were the cheapest I found at the time. But B&H was less than $75 higher, so things may have changed by now. I had considered the SR12, but am glad I didn't because it was a couple hundred more than the SR11, and I transfer my footage to the PC at the end of the day anyway. In shooting a full day's worth of volleyball footage, we ran out of the three batteries we had, and still had about 10gb of hard drive space left. We simply didn't need the SR12, and the money we saved by going with the SR11 was used to buy a tripod and an extra battery for the SR11. So it worked out great for us...

I don't think you can go wrong with the Sony SR11/12 cameras, but whether or not you want to wait until 2009 is up to you. If you have an HD camera to shoot with now, then maybe that's not a bad idea--it isn't like the SR11/12 are going anywhere. I seriously doubt that they would discontinue those cameras already, but I suppose you never know. In my case, I needed an HD palmcorder and the Sony was it. But even if Sony comes out with something new in 2009, I don't think the SR11/12 sales are going to suffer much. They are incredible cameras, IMO.

Good thoughts. Actually, I'm way back right now with a 2001-ish Sony Digital8 handycam. I really don't even shoot anything cause I hate it so much. :) However, at the same time I'm not in dire need to get the new one. One reason I'm thinking about waiting is because this will be the last camcorder we get for quite a while and I want it to be as "latest and greatest" as possible (even though it will be old school 6 months from then).

Well, I wouldn't worry about Sony discontinuing the SR11/12--certainly it could happen, but I seriously doubt it...at least for another year or so. I could be wrong, but I thought that these units were released in March 2008?

So your plan seems like a good one to me, especially if you can live with your present camera for another few months. But as others here will tell you--there's no such thing as the "last camcorder we get for awhile." Famous last words...lol.
