OTReally out there camera question Seek your input

I have a PD150. I need a second camera. I have been able to borrow a second PD150 as a second camera for 2 cam shoots. But I would rather not do that.

I have a chance to get an FX1 used for a reasonable price, or I could get a new HV20. I know the HV30 is coming out but I'm not interested. This is like comparing apples and oranges I know. I will probably be shooting/delivering mainly SD but I would like to get started into HD so I can't see the advisability of spending on another SD cam.

My big concern is which one of these two would match up footage wise more closely with the PD150. I know the PD 150 has better low light capabilities but besides that can anyone give me any thoughts. If these were the two I had to choose from which would it be. If not these is there another choice along the same lines. I really don't want this to turn intop another "I use Sony or Canon or Panasonic so you must use those" thread.

I shoot mostly events and not very often in real dim light.

Any constructive comments?

Thanks, and no laughing.

I am going to bring this back to the top and maybe I can get some responses. Promise I won't do it again if no one has any opinions.

I have a VX2000 in mint condition that would make a perfect second camera for you. I'll sell it to you for $1000 if you like.

Laurence,
Thank you, it would make a good second cam but I am trying to stay away from acquiring another SD camera.

Winrock,
Thank you for your reply. Any reasons that you would like give?

I've shot mixed PD150/FX1 footage before, and the PD150 ended up feeling like a slightly-less-sharp and slightly higher contrast (lower dynamic range) FX1 in the SD down-res clips.

I feel quite comfortable saying that you should go with the FX1. You also have the *huge* perk of having the same battery type.

I have a new Z7 on order which I'm expecting sometime this month. From what I hear, the picture will be like an FX1 or Z1 except that it will have low light sensitivity like a PD150. That and the lens is replaceable. I am pretty excited.

Be aware that the new Sony cameras are copy protected against using generic batteries. Some generic batteries have worked this out, but not very many, so be careful.

you said it best "This is like comparing apples and oranges I know"

Canon makes great cams but not a fair comparison, and i would think the sony will match your sony fairly decent.
good luck with which ever you purchase !
