Out of sync audio in rendered project

I'm having a problem with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.

It happened before on my desktop. When I render an edited video to Real Video the audio is out of sync. When this happened before I moved the source file to another of my computers and edited and rendered it successfully there.

My main desktop has died. I installed MSP8 on my new laptop and initially it worked just fine .. but now it, too, has the same problem. It's not just rendering to REAL either. I just tried rendering to mpg1 and the same thing happened.

Within MSP8 (on the timeline) the audio is fine on playback while I am editing .. but not after rendering.

Anyone have any idea what is going on .. I can't use the software and my "people" are asking "Where is the file you promised?"

It's a safe bet you are editing mpeg (and not avi - the mothers milk of VMS). Sync issues usually indicate an issue with 1) the source 2) the capture method. 3) your editing technique. In my experience rendering just reveals what already was a problem and maybe you just didn't notice it. Keep in mind preview can be deceiving and mislead you - especially if you are doing a lot with the clip. I doubt it's the software or your computer that is the problem. (You might persuade me otherwise if you told me you took the IDENTICAL project and transferred it to another computer without any changes and proceeded from the exact same point).

Now what to do. Look at 1 and two first. If that doesn't help or can't be changed or altered, then I would suggest you ungroup your audio from your video and cheat if one way or another to get the syc close, using obvious sounds as improvised markers such as the closing of a door to help you 'stretch or squish' the sound accurately. You may need to make tiny splits in the audio line. It may take some trial and error to get it, but it is possible to get things close. You may need to render an envelope of trouble spots to your final product just to check it before you render the whole thing. I hope this helps. Good luck with it.

P.S. You described several other problems which are not clear to me. A dying desktop - dunno. MSP8 works and then doesn't - Vegas is the most rock solid sotware around - so again - dunno, other than a sync issue will still be a sync issue no matter how you render it.

I have suffered many problems in the past with sync problems which used to drive me crazy.
I can confirm that Rustier's 'golden rules' hold true. Capture as AVI using VMS and you shouldn't have any problems. I had some AVIs which appeared to break this rule, until I realised that I had captured them a few days prior to using VMS.
