Output Questions

Hi-

I am ever so close to purchasing VV3. I have the demo and have been playing with it with Storm captured avi's. Great stuff.

I am totally not set up for this and so I need to rely on all of you for answers for input/output. I have no firewire card, etc. Yet.

A: If captured with Vegas codec, are render times faster than with canopus codec? (I assume so, but need to confirm)

B: Is it possible to render transitions/titles/effects only then play the entire timeline and output via firewire to DV tape? I have not seen the "red lines" that are found in Premiere to indicate what needs to be rendered. OR, do I need to render the whole thing then output to tape?

C: Final Question: What kind of render times are you experiencing in the NTSC standard output? I know this is a loaded question and depends on your system, etc. but try to give as much info as possible.

Thank you.

I've seen your posts over at the Cow. Do you own a DVStorm? If so, why are you looking at Vegas? Not being a smartass, just wondering what types of shows you do, VV3 has a lot of features that can really benefit certain types of work.

Back to your questions... #1, I've had much improved TIMELINE performance when using VV captured clips, renders really depend more on what's going on in your show and not necessarily what codec you used on previous clips(of course VV captured files with little filtering will render very fast).

Vegas is very different from Premiere in that you dont' ever have to render until your show is locked. No red bars above the timeline. You have a few choices as far as renders go- you can pre-render certain areas of your timeline as you work, or you can wait 'til your finished and render out the entire file or you can finish and hit print to tape where VV takes over and renders everything as needed inlcuding color bars, slug etc. and outputs to your DV device. Whichever way you choose, you're eventually gonna have to do some rendering before outputting.

This is not Storm, it is a software driven program and you don't get the instant/anytime play to tape the Storm offers.

I'm an After Effects user, so I'm used to rendering everything. Vegas is the 1st NLE that gives you After Effects power and quality along with awesome editing and audio tools. I do so much with layers, compositing, titles, graphics, color treamtents etc. that I don't mind waiting when I'm done with my project. I'm doing things I could never do on any other system. Render times will ultimately depend on what kind of hardware you have or can afford.

I've made money with Premiere and Final Cut Pro and think VV3 blows 'em both away!

Feel free to email me with any more questions.
