Pad at the head and tail?

Anyone tested to see how much blank at beginning and end assures the file isn't clipped? I've seen some variation between players but never fully looked into it.

i use a default 8 frames of black/silence at the head and tail of all clips before encoding and that seems to have served me well.

I always put in at least a second at the beginning and a couple of seconds at the end. The extra time never seems to bother anyone, and it often is just enough for the word "Play" that most DVD players idiotically* display on the screen to disappear before the video starts.

*I mean really now ... i know i hit the play button, i don't need the DVD player to tell me that. And if the video starts playing then i know it's playing. Good grief!
