PAL DV .avi to .mov... Wrong field order in 8.0c

A Mac-based stock footage rep needs Quicktime .mov versions of my PAL DV .avi files.

I have tried encoding these in Vegas 8.0c, MPEG Streamclip, and TMPGEnc Xpress 4 with "lower field first" in the settings to match the original .avi files.

However in each case the footage loads back into Vegas 8.0c as "upper field first" and looks horrible until I change it to "lower field first" in the "properties > media" dialogue. I tried rendering from Vegas with "upper field first" but that just made things worse.

I've no idea what will happen in other NLE's but I'm concerned about end users working with footage with the wrong field order and not knowing it.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this a Vegas bug? A Quicktime bug? Anything I can do to avoid it?

Vegas does not interpret QT files field order correctly. If your footage is lower field and you render lower field QT, you will be fine.

Another idea, Nick,
Render to one of the AVC formats in Vegas. If it plays correctly, you can always rename the .mp4 extension to .mov if your client is picky about it.

Hmm..., Mark, trying to keep it lossless if I can. Will start a separate thread about that tomorrow as I'm having further issues with luminosity.

Edit: p.s. those Vegas AVC formats are CRAP! With all the time you spend with x264 in Handbrake I thought you'd be the last person to recommend the bundled AVC codecs.

Further Edit: ...then again if I throw a DV bitrate at it maybe they're not that crap...?

Ah, got it. You're trying to keep them MOV DV.
Does the Avid DV codec give you the same problem?

Or does Vegas just open these files incorrectly?

As per your edit, you're right -- I don't use the Vegas AVC encoders much.

Didn't know about that Avid Quicktime DV codec. Unfortunately the same problem. UFF in Vegas instead of LFF.
