PAL to NTSC Conversion

Im interested in purchasing Vegas Video 3. Im wondering if it will do conversions between PAL and NTSC and Vice Versa ? I own a DV500 capture card and i want to capture footage off PAL VHS tapes and PAL mini DV tapes and convert them to NTSC and then output this through the analog out of the DV500 to my VCR and record it as a NTSC VHS. Is this all possible ?

If so does it do 100% pro conversions ? i have heard of some methods which dont handle the conversion of frame size and frame rates well which make for bad interlaced looking results etc....

Also if it does do this conversion is it simply a matter of importing the PAL DV file and then selecting to render to an NTSC DV file or do you have to tweak other settings ?

Any help is appreciated..

You can simply import one format and render to the other. Vegas will do a fairly decent job of this. It will handle all the resizing and resampling automatically. There are a few switches you might want to tweak though. There is an optional filter for blending fields that may give fewer interlacing artifacts when converting frame rates. Since the frame size is also being changed, you may want to experiment with the different rendering qualities (best vs. good) to see which resizing method looks better with your material (best isn't always better than good!)

The new Proencoder software encoder from Canopus has a PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL conversion feature. Anyone used this encoder ? It's about $600.

You might check this out:

DVFilm Atlantis

It simulates movie film converted to NTSC by treating your PAL movie as
25 frames/sec progressive-scan.
