...pan/crop and track motion....

...still having trouble knowing when to use each one...here's what I need to do:

1. bring in PIP (smaller obviously)
2. crop PIP into a square (not resize)
3. PIP itself has motion
4. PIP has to travel across screen

...I know where all the buttons are and know keyframing...all I need is a workflow and when to use pan/crop or track motion for each step....TIA for any help...

Either one will do what you ask. From my point of view, I like to keep this stuff on the event level, it is cleaner.

If you need a drop shadow or a border on your PIP you will have to go with track motion.

If I've interpreted your question correctly, the workflow I would use is as follows:

1. Track Motion - Set size of frame
2. Pan/Crop - Crop frame
3. Pan/Crop - move size & postition of crop
4. Track Motion - move frame across the screen
