Pan/Crop Zoom

OhMyGosh wrote on 6/25/2007, 9:05 AM
When using the 'Zoom Edit Tool' whether in Pan/Crop or the Timeline, is there any way to reduce the magnification (I want to zoom out, not in)? Many times I will zoom in to take a look at something, but then I want to go back out. In PhotoShop it is very easy to toggle between the two, and was just wondering how to do it here. Also in Pan/Crop, if I turn off 'Lock Aspect Ratio' and move the sides in, it makes a 'curtain' effect based around the center of the event. Is there a way to move the 'curtain' to a different location in the event? I know that I can move the event underneath, but it is the 'curtain' I want to move. Thanks. Cin

To zoom out, pull the view rectangle outward so it gets larger, and this should result in the video getting smaller. In order to take full advantage of this, you may have to reduce the zoom on the workspace (see "Zoom" under "Workspace" on the left).

To easily restore original size, right click on the pan/crop area and select "Restore".

Thanks for the help mick. I was just wondering if there was a way to get the magnifying glass to shrink, as well as enlarge a section, but what you suggested also works. Thanks again. Cin
PS. I was also hoping to see if anyone had any ideas on moving the 'curtain' to a differnent spot on the timeline.

Cin:
What exactly do you mean by "curtain"....are you talking about the black sides when using portrait photos that do not fill the screen????

Thanks Icdrdan,
If you take a video clip, open in pan/crop, turn off 'lock aspect ratio', move the side markers, you will see basicly black 'curtains' that form about the middle. I know I can move the video underneath, but I really want to move the curtain. If you look at the posts by 'dibbkd' about how to make a 24 style PIP, you can see the effect I'm trying to get. Thanks again. Cin

OhMyGosh,

Oops -- yeah, I see what you are saying. I think you will have to use Track Motion to then move your cropped video where you want it. Otherwise, your cropped image always sits in the middle of the output screen.

Track Motion operates kind of the opposite of pan crop. The frame you see is your video frame, and the X/Y arrow you see in the background is the center of the output screen. If you wanted your cropped video on the right side of your screen, grab the frame and move it to the right.

Track motion is keyframed, so if you need to re-use the track later in the project, just create a new keypoint, right-click, and select "Restore Box" to put everything back to normal.

So crop the image with Pan/Crop, then use track motion to position it. (Maybe Kevin can confirm this is what he did...)

PS: Note also that the track motion feature creates a mini-keyframe timeline right underneath your video track on the main timeline. If you want keyframes that are "fixed" -- i.e. you want to hold this position for the duration of the clip or the up to the next keyframe, simply right-click on each keyframe and select "Hold". This way, the keyframe settings are frozen until the next keyframe is encountered. Otherwise, if left on "Linear", then the Track Motion position will gradually interpolate from one position to the next.

Big thank you Tim for taking the time to explain all that to me so well, as well as everyone elses input :) That is what I was trying to do. Now I just wish I could view the links that Kevin gave us to look at so I could try and perfect some of these effects. Again, thanks. Cin

Cin, if you go to this link http://www.myhax0r.net/videos/dibbkd's video examples[/link]

You then see these links: Just left-click on those links to then get to the next page and then you'll see the video links:

how to green screen in vegas
how to split screen
Duplicating kids
American Idol Elvis
How to remove a spot from a Video

(and I know the page isn't very fancy, but I just threw it up there one day)

:)

Thank you 'dibbkd' for posting the link. I really enjoy looking at your work, and appreciate you taking the time and effort to show it in such detail as to how you do it :) Take care. Cin
