Panasonic 700 series and VMS

I'm considering changing my HV30 to one of the new Panasonic 700 series, probably the SD700 and I've read some reports that the highest resolution mode, 1080/50p, causes problems with some playback codecs. Has anyone out there in VMS-land got one of these and, if so, have they had any experience of this mode with VMS? It has a VBR of around 28Mbps which is pushing things a bit!

To answer my own question, and in case anyone is interested, I got the Panasonic HDC-SD700 and took a few test shots. I recorded some footage at the second level quality (17Mbps) and at the full HD 1080/50p (28Mbps). So far VMS has handled both well, though the preview is a little slower at the full res.

Im not fully sure is it related to my HDC-SD700 and 50p mode I use, but VMS10 seems to be crash quite often. For example when I try to render movie using Sony AVC format application keeps crashing until I select 25 frames per second.

WMV seems to work only with certain settings etc.

Also rendering times are really slow compared to Live Movie Maker 2011.

Though, I havn't submitted any support requests yet. Of course it's possible that user (which will be me) does something wrong...

You need a really fast machine to edit 50p or 60p footage. I'd suggest you download and try the trial version of Platinum 11 that was released today, which includes a much faster h.264 decoder (hopefully stabler too).

Also make sure you preview the footage at preview/auto setting, and if you right-click on the preview window, tell it to not resize (there are two options there you need to uncheck to help decoding be faster). Also, always use the right project properties. Obviously, if you add plugins, it won't be fast, this is to be expected no matter what.

If after all that your preview is still slow, get a faster machine, or don't bother with 50p, or use 50p only for few shots, when you want to do slow motion to 50/2=25p only.
