Panasonic HDC-HS900

With everything ending up on line I'm thinking about shooting progressive from now on. I do a lot of action stuff and don't want to lose the temporal resolution so I'm looking for a 60p camera. Panasonic announced this one and it looks pretty nice for the serious amateur I am.

3 sensors, 60p, looks like a good lens and for those who care there is a 3D add on.

Looks like a winner. I wasn't in the market for a new camcorder, but bought two TM700s and am so pleased that I did so. Much better slo-mo without going to a lot of effort, much better green-screen keys, etc.

This new model appears to provided improved image stabilization - not that I complain about the stabilization of the TM700s.

I'd predict you'll be very please with this one . . .

If you'd like to compare the image quality of the Panasonic with a Sony HC-1 (which was not a bad 1-chip camcorder), you can go to www.torealize.net.

Sony
Click on the big blue "1-The Encounter" button in the left column.

Then click on the "short version" - highlighted in yellow.

You'll see a close-up of my face beginning at 37 seconds into that clip. Notice how gray my eyes are - no matter how I tinkered with the color using AAV Colorlab plugin, I simply could not get the actual color to show.

Panasonic
Click on the "2 - The Visit. . ." button.

Then scroll down a bit and click on the "2c- . . . physics" link.

At 44 seconds into that clip, you'll see a similar close-up, identically lit (5500K color temp) greenscreen. Notice how superior the Panasonic colors are.

In passing, I might mention that I never was able to get an especially good green-screen chromakey with the Sony. But with the Panasonic, it is much better. The key in this clip was pulled with BCC7. It's the first one I ever did, and I didn't even read the instructions or watch any training tutorial - it was that intuitive. NewBlue does almost as well.

Probably the key would have been even better if I would have done a bit of homework - I didn't even know what a lot of the BCC7 settings were for.

Oh, well - something yet to do to keep me off the streets . . .
