Yes, it is. I own one and love it. Are you looking to buy one? I heard that Panasonic may be introducing the *next* model of it, which will include true 30p. The dv-953 claims to shoot progressive scan, but it is only for the stills. The progressive scan for video is, I believe, a field doubler. It is still an excellent camera for the money, and it is completely compatible with Vegas capture. Hope that Answers your question.

Yes, the DV953 is very compatible with Vegas. Why do you ask? Are you having trouble?

Also, as corug7 said, the DV953 does not do progressive video but it does do frame mode, which is not a field doubler. Read more about it .

The "new" Panasonic is the AG-DVC30 (to be released Mar/April). It has a video frame mode, but it not true progressive scan like it's older (and more expensive sibling) the AG-DVX 100(A). It's more akin to the Canon frame mode which is (I think) 1/2 an interlaced frame.

That's an extremely informative article, thanks heaps!
I'd looked at some footage shot 25p with a DVX100 and it looked sharper than 50i, now I know why that happens. I bet most of us didn't realise how much processing is done in the camera and how it affects the real resolution of what we end up with.
The startling conclusion is that when shooting progressive and using electronic 4:3 to 16:9 conversion you end up with no worse resolution than 50i 4:3, hmmm.

Thanks Everyone! I have a DV-953 now, which i love. I'm thinking of getting Vegas. I've been playing w/ the demo version and i like it so far. I'm also considering premiere and wondering what else is out there.
second question (if i may be so bold),
the Canopus ACEDVio Analog and DV Editing Card comes with Vegas 4.0) (looks like a good deal) -anyone have this, and recomend this setup? why?
thanks

I don’t have the Canopus ACEDVio but I wish I did. Canopus is known for its quality converters and the price with Vegas 4 can’t be beat. You get the converter and Vegas 4 for just the price of Vegas 4 alone. The difference in the price without Vegas 4 is only $200 which means you’re really getting Vegas 4 for only $200. That’s an incredible price. I would definitely get it if I didn’t own Vegas 4 already.

I purchased the AVEDVio w/Vegas for my boss and he's happy with it - only hink in the works came when I installed it on his Dell Precision 360 Workstation (There is a Dell/ACEDVIo issue) - but Tech Support sent me the updated files, simple instructions and it has worked like a charm ever since.

As for Vegas, maybe it's just me but it is so much more intuitive than Premiere - I just look at it and it makes sense - then again, I had Acid Pro before Vegas. Premiere has made great improvements but it just makes me think too hard. Also, I could rarely get realtime anything out of Premiere (P4 3.2GHz, 2GB RAM) and yet Vegas gives you great previews even on just average PCs (P4 2.26GHz w/512MB RAM)

This forum is also the BEST I have ever used - lots of traffic, seriously knowledgeable people who are WILLING to help, and even the occasional comic relief (Hey Zippy).

I say buy it - you know you want to :)

I have to agree with the others. Vegas is the best prosumer editor for the money hands down. I say prosumer because it doesn't offer real-time rendering, but every other aspect of it is professional, except for the learning curve. If you know anything about editing at all, Vegas will suit you just fine. I would recommend downloading the plug-in pack from www.debugmode.com (as would everyone else here), it is indispensible, and FREE. Also, the color correction tools will help with the saturation problems inherent in the dv953. Trust us, you really can't go wrong with Vegas, especially at that price! Good luck.

As far as I know no camera lets you capture DV vis USB.
To answer your question, yes, we all use firewire for capture.

Hi,
I am sorry I never realised that my camera has the DV output as panasonic does not provide the ieee cape with the camera. They provided only the usb cable with the camera pack. Yesterday I checked up with them and they suggested me to buy the ieee1394 cable from a computer shop. Now I am able to get the video into vegas thru DV out put from my camera.

Thanks for indicating that no camera can output DV thru USB.
